Kids today. The whole world is new to them. Not that I'm that old, yet, but I do know a little history.

OMG, players are going to different teams! It'll destroy the whole league! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Look up how the Spurs got George Gervin. (Which really did play a role in the end of the Squires, and the ABA.) Then look up how Babe Ruth went to the Yankees. In 1919. Then that Yankees superteam dominated baseball so overwhelmingly that it totally destroyed the sport and baseball doesn't even exist today!

Har har har. But yeah, I know, the sky is falling.
The difference here is that now it's all player-driven. And yes, that distinction matters. Smart management is the only hope most franchises in this league have of ever winning anything. If even that doesn't get rewarded anymore, then the majority of the league will never have a chance, and there's no point in anyone (outside of a select handful of fanbases) investing their time or money in the NBA anymore.

This. Its just my opinion, but I blame LeBron after he teamed up with Wade and Bosh. Since then it seems to me like all these guys wanna do is team up with other superstars. The NBA is starting to look like a grown-up AAU league. This is why to me MJ is the greatest. He wanted to destroy his compe ors, not join them.
Muddies up the legacies and conversation altogether. KD wins 2 rings in GS and it means what? Not much to me. He failed in OKC with a lot of talent around him. GS was so stacked it was impossible not to win. Number 2 goes to LA and wins 1 or 2 more again so what? Team is so stacked it is impossible not to win. And for Lebron who is to trying to catch Jordan in the minds of many, this is NOT the way to do it.. This is destroying the league..

What's the point of having 30 teams in the league now? Really.....teams that do the right things in drafting, scouting, developing players do not see the benefit of it in the long run. Any NBA team can provide multi generational wealth to the top players. That is not good enough for the current crop of NBA "stars" anymore. Is there any top 20 player in the league now that is a decent, likable person? There might be a few, but the bulk of the top tier guys a selfish Azzhats with zero self awareness.

These thin-skinned, lying, colluding players just set up their own personal safe spaces to try and guarantee success. At least the Spurs could overcome the obstacles placed in front of them as a small market team for a long long time. Now that's over - there's hardly any time to build something up before a completely incompetent train wreck franchise - such as the Clippers for most of its history or the Lakers (of the last eight or nine years) poaches your players. The entire Lakers front office and coaching staff has done a horrible job most of the last ten years - recent events don't change that fact.
Excellent post. And the example set for guys coming into the league trying to become the next superstars is going to wreck the league. Kids like Zion see KD team up in GS, now maybe Number 2 in LA along with AD and Lebron. So after 4 years or so in NO, he will call up some superstar buddies and go to LA or NY, or Boston or wherever in this era of winning rings the easy way. Maybe a new CBA will have to address this, as smaller market teams just keep getting wrecked with this collusion.

I agree with the first part but MJ had the best sidekick in the history of the game imo, take him out and he goes nowhere fast.
Jordan after 3 years of losing did not call up Isiah Thomas (He hated his guts) and ask to play on the Pistons. And Jordan's rivals did not pull that either. Players stood for something back then. It was about winning the right way. Teaming up proves nothing.

Or injury driven. Durant and Klay say hi!

Or luck driven. Like the T Wolves drafting Jonny Flynn instead of Steph Curry.

Or maybe it's all become uncle driven!

Kareem went from the Bucks to the Lakers just because he personally wanted to, btw. Do you know how many years ago that was? Of course it totally destroyed the Bucks, who don't even exist anymore, and who never had another chance at an MVP player. (Giannis says hi!)

But sure, tell me more about the sky falling.

Which is totally fine and atleast it's not the Lakers. This would pissed of the Lakers and the Lakers' fans it that happened. If Kawhi went to Lakers this off-season, this will make the Spurs more a laughing matter in the league. If he leaves the Raptors, Raptors' fans won't be pissed because they knew he's possibly rental anyway and Kawhi gave them a championship already. Who do you think will be pissed if he signs with the Lakers? We know the answer already.
Your wrong the raptor fans on realgm have it clear that they wouldn’t cheer for kawhi if he went to the lakers

I especially like the story about MJ punching Steve Kerr during practice. MJ knew the right way to win! Beat the crap out of your teammates!

The reason the NFL is successful is because on any given Sunday...etc. With players forming super teams, the level of compe ion suffers to the point where only a couple of teams have an actual chance of winning the Chip...Why would casuals want to invest time, MONEY, and energy when they know their home team has no shot vs the latest superteam(s)...sure the diehards will still cheer for thier favorite team but the diehards alone can't sustain franchises...attendances goes down...merch sales take a hit...teams stop making profits...etc

It is all optics he has to wait until the last moment so him and Uncle Fester can make a huge drama news splash. I see them together crying saying how hard and emotional stressful the decision was but they are leaving CANADA and coming back to AMERICA going to (Clippers, Nets, Philly). Then his Uncle will say KY is so emotionally drained please respect his privacy and no questions

I doubt a new CBA would address this. Frankly, the league office doesn’t see it as an issue at all since most NBA fans are casuals who easily change their allegiance to these super teams and buy their merchandise.

Kawhi not doing anything, he is in the back of the car with his coloring book and happy meal because he was a good boy winning the championship. Uncle Dennis is the man behind the wheel of this vehicle.

The NBA doesn't give a and neither do the small market owners since revenue is shared. Casuals just jump on the newest bandwagon too. It sucks but that's the reality.

I'd like to say I'd quit the NBA if another bull superteam formed but I'd probably stil watch my Spurs. Wouldn't watch many of the other games though.

Leonard's demand that Magic attend the meeting with the Lakers is a bizarre request, as NBA rules preclude Magic from attending.
    Surely, Leonard's camp knows this?

Perhaps this request is a way for Leonard's camp to tell the Lakers, "Look what you might have had before you got rid of Magic."

I'm aware of the Gervin story. Contract bought for $250K by Angelo Drossos and the ownership group. The ABA was dying and not going the right direction by the time Gervin's contract was purchased (a court case upheld the deal for SA). The ABA was already contracting and becoming non-viable financially. A merger took awhile, but that was the end game for the ABA (and the NBA) to snuff out some of the salary escalation.

There will likely be a work stoppage in in couple of years for the NBA - the owners and players do not see eye to eye right now.

I hear you. I have been a Spurs fan for such a long time I'll always have interest in them. I cannot abide by a collection of half wits and morons (LAL ownership and management) being rewarded with upper echelon players who quit on their current teams.

The Bucks have often been an afterthought most of the last 42 years since Jabbar left. They got a package of crap in exchange for Kareem. Its the same story over and over. Its a minor miracle the Spurs won so many LOBs - Duncan was not a self absorbed AHole.
