From what somebody posted, it was strategic. They had to make it a sign-and-trade deal for Carroll to preserve the MLE for Morris. However, an S&T has to be for 3 years. So they had to change Carroll's contract, to 3 yrs, to make the $ available for Morris. One of the delightful technicalities of the CBA.

Ball is on PATFO court. I expect he would negotiate a buyout later/eventually but any other team can definitely cut in with a deal to the Grizzlies b4 then. There is a chance he never is bought out and is instead traded.

I think the Spurs would need to trade anyways, not sure they have enough money to sign him outright without a trade.
