    Serious question, is US a top 60 team in the world?

    They dont seem to have the same amount of euro level quality players compared to teams like mexico, japan, korea etc.

    USMNT is ranked #30 by FIFA, one spot below Japan.

    Mexico is historic 2nd tier underachiever - since 1994 (7 tournaments) the Mexicans have lost in the 1st Knockout match

    Head to head the Americans were a bit better since roughly 2000 but the tide has shifted recently

    Both nations generally benefit from playing in a weak federation. This ensures qualifying for the World Cup

    But I think both teams are hurt by having a 3rd tier domestic league. This means few of their guys leave overseas to play in Europe. This is also the curse of for example Turkey. A worse off domestic league would force them to move and be challenged. Instead they stay local and furthermore the debate comes and goes whether guys from the domestic league should be given priority

    Mexico really should be better and be more successful over USA than they have been.
