I don't think it's right when it comes to the history of the position, but it would be foolish not to acknowledge two things:
1) This hardly started with this administration. And specifically the man in charge right now certainly didn't respect about the office when he was not in it. Neither did the conservative media to a large extent.
2) We're all taught that respect is earned, not simply given. If you're running a clown act, it's definitely difficult to try to pretend you're not in a circus.
