The "but they can also use this as a weapon!" deflection is just another lazy tactic. When murderers start using cars and knives to they extent that they use guns, then we can start talking about it.
And per your logic, if cars and knives actually had the same effectiveness as a combat/self-defense instrument, then conservatives (or anyone else) should have little issue giving guns up in favor of a Ford 150 or Buck knife. "Well, first it's higher minimum age laws, next it's the ATF knocking down your door and confiscating all your guns!"

I know you highlighted rifles, but I'm not myopically focused on the AR-15. All the gun control tweaks I mentioned would cover every gun.
