Apparently this is standard practice in maritime law to use this 1851 law to limit liability. Onus is now on the families to prove negligence by the owner. If they can't...

Yeah, I guess the limit doesn't have to be granted by a judge. The high profile may help it go that way. It will be interesting to see where the suits go if it turns out to be a diver's battery that caused it.
