What's the problem here? DiGenova lying on TV about doing pro-bono oppo research for Trump might be unethical, but it's not like anyone was going to mistake him for "not a Trump supporter"

Especially if it's those three. Nothing could work better for the Democrats than that dream team.

I can't imagine why Di Genova would lie about doing pro-bono oppo research for Trump when we all know he gets paid on the reg to kiss his ass on Fox News.

Yes it is. Rudy already publicly stated he was working on Trump’s behalf. And he wasn’t a government official.

There is something wrong for any US citizen solicitation of foreign governments For election purposes. He has done the same thing as Trump as a private citizen. The DOJ has brought this up. Rudy would have prosecuted himself back in the day. He knows. And he is Trump’s lawyer which makes the irony very rich.

And? Campaigns pay a lot of dough for oppo-research, and so does media in general vetting candidates.

They're all american citizens, I don't see what's the big story here.

They pay money to foreign governments? They bribe government officials?

Actually, it is different. As much as Trump likes to say he did X or Y as a 'private citizen', that's just ignorance. He's a government representative as long as he holds office. The law is well established on this.

For actual private citizens, I believe the buck stops on things that are specifically prohibited, like being a non-profit and receiving payments, or violating campaign finance laws, etc.

Take the NRA/Butina case for example... the remedies sought circle around revoking the tax-exempt status or whether they violated any campaign finance laws, not whether there was anything improper as far as connecting candidates with the spy.

Exactly. Should it come to light these people were paid under the table by government somehow, then sure, now you have a story.

I would like to know who's paying for all of Nosferatu's trips to the Ukraine, for example.

Actually this all has its beginnings during the revolutionary war. France and England were trying to influence the US. Public and private individuals who were not supposed to deal with foreign governments concerning our elections. The press does this, or is supposed to do its vetting and research through foreign press or individual interviews (not government officials). The press is not supposed to pay or bribe or influence foreign government intelligence to give up goods on people in our country up for election purposes as I understand it and it makes a lot of historical sense.

This was and still can be a huge problem.

I don't know that the video says government officials (foreign or otherwise) were bribed, but yeah, there are laws against such a thing in the US that affects private citizens. I just haven't seen that allegation made in that story.

I do think Giuliani is out of control, and as good a lawyer he thinks he is, he will find himself having to do a lot of explaining, but not particularly about soliciting the aid of other private citizens to conduct oppo research.

(Now, the ethical question is a completely different ballgame, but I feel we've moved past ethics a long time ago in politics).

It seems to me this then starts to border on a traitorous act. Private citizens can be involved in this. This begins to enter the realm of a foreign government interfering in our governments makeup through elections by bribing or just influencing through some sort of backscratching or blackmail. This is why the president of Ukraine is denying this vehemently even though its right there on the recorded conversation. "Oh, they are not really asking me for anything" NO, they are definitely asking you for something.

Then of course there is a lot more involved after this. Money, individual or government... Trying to hide all the details through illegal means... on and on.

And I am fully aware that this has clearly happened before by private and public officials and not been prosecuted as its easy to hide.

Which is why it is so amazing that Trump and Rudy have basically just laid it bare.
I find it quite shocking. But maybe the rest of the country not so much which is why it was a surprise to some that Pelosi actual has gone forward.
I seems a good portion of Americans dont see a problem. For me, the conversation alone is absolutely astounding. And now throw Rudy in and who knows who else...

Ultimately it's what you can prove. But, regardless, impeachment is a different process and standards, and we shouldn't mix the two, considering that Rudy is allegedly not a government official.
