This is a partially a test of loyalty. And his gambit to be a king.

And then asked other countries again in front of the world. He actually has a notion that if he does the same thing again, it becomes palatable.
Now i do understand, you being a Putin/ Assad man, that you do not truly understand elections but give it a thought. Try to understand that in the US, this is a really serious act. Understand we find it so serious because of the huge problems with the British and French interference (when we were a fairly weak democracy). We wanted to have real elections, not coronations of kings and queens paid for and decide for us by outside powers. Understand this election stuff was partially responsible for the election of a TV entertainer as president over a women who wanted a coronation. Donald Trump was elected by a process he now wants to go away. That’s the move of an authoritarian.
