tl;dr: From lottery pick to scrap heap to Spurs starting power forward.

Not as good of a passer (still solid though) but he looks a lot like Bobo out there. Even the way he moves and his pace is very similar.
PATFO may have done it again. If only the in-game coaching was on par with the front office side of things.
From what I got from the article: he’ll impress in his first season with a team and then fall flat in the second season.Basically we’ll hate him next year.
Yeah that is what caught my eye when reading the article how can you duplicate that on two different teams is kinda crazy in a bad way.lol
I am definitely not giving him a decent contract until year 3 but in all honesty the dude needs to bulk up a little more. He also better have a come to Jesus meeting with himself and decide to work his ass to stay in the league or his career will be over real fast.
I like to see what he does in the next 10-20 games before I can believe he is a legit starter. I remember jumping the gun many years ago with Elson off of his first regular season game and thinking he was the Spurs center of the future. We all saw how that ended.
At 23 he was almost out of the league if the Spurs didn't pick him up!! Now he's finding that he's in starting lineup and finishing games!!!
I didn't know what type of player Lyles was. I thought he just took jumpers and missed them. But that first game he was like a Diaw.
Hope he can "spread"the floor and make 3s consistently. Otherwise he's just another person defenses can sag off to contest Demaridge's long 2s.
Jesus ing Christ slow the down.
Great writeup.
Sometimes dumb luck is better than the best laid plans. And isn't necessity the mother of invention?
Cliches aside, this guy always seems to have a good debut in his first year followed by a dropoff.
So we may have to wait a while to come to any conclusion on Lyles.
But Pop seems to like him and that's a good sign (unless Pop is just stubbornly trying to claim the whole Morris fiasco really worked out in the end).

Quality read. Really enjoyed this one![]()
That's timvps article though, he's a bargain signing because of at ude issues. The only hope is that he matures or that pop gets through to him in a way two prior coaches have not
Julius Randle killed him.
I hadn't thought of that but it's good the Spurs have a second-year option on him. Judging by his history, you shouldn't think of signing him to a long-term deal before you see two full seasons![]()
I think everyone having extremely low expectations for this guy helps him.
The guy has a solid debut for us and people double-down on him being a scrub... smh.
Excellent! I didn't know or forgot that Lyles was sick for those first two preseason games that Poeltl started. I also hadn't noticed that Lyles was that shot-happy last year. 15.9 FGA/36? Dayum.
I'd like to know what happened in Denver last year. In preseason he was pretty damn good, and he started the regular season pretty good. But somewhere around Christmas things changed. The truth is, if he had kept his 3P% up to around 35%, his offensive numbers would have still looked pretty good. But he shot .255 from the arc and took them more often than he ever had in his career. The funny thing is, he made almost 41% of his corner 3's, so he must have really stunk it up from straight away.
I'd also like to know what makes a guy like him decide to start chasing boards. In that interview with Jefferson, where he ed about the 3 hour practices, RJ was giving him about not rebounding hard. That's pretty much his reputation. So did Pop sit him down, or did he just decide to do that on his own?
What crossed my mind, is that the Spurs have that new assistant coach - oh, what's his name - something like "Duncan" I think, and he's supposed to be pretty good at the big man stuff like rebounding. So they say.
In other words, I have to suspect that Tim is doing Lyles some good.
Hopefully he becomes more reliable with that 3pt shot.
And who isn't to say, we are starting him to maximize his value is a future trade? I can easily see the Spurs package him with DeMar later this year. Especially if DJ, Bryn and Derrick keep giving us solid minutes.Looking at the contract he signed with San Antonio, it wasn’t even clear if the Spurs wanted him or just wanted a tradable asset, as his contract is front-loaded in a way to maximize its value in a future trade.
He’s going to be our weakest starter all season obviously, but if he can just play within himself and not try to do too much, I think he can be a decent player for us and tbh. I hope he continues to improve as he gets more comfortable in our system and more comfortable with our guys.
Also, if he can become a 38% shooter from 3 like he was his first two seasons in Utah, that would be huge. Or even around a 35% one. Would be massive for spacing.
