God I miss Navarro Bowman. He's the leader this defense is missing.
You misspelled Patrick Willis. Bowman was great but Willis was the leader

Edit: Sherman is doing just fine leading them, imo.

Patrick Willis was the best player, but Bowman was the one who really saw things before they happened and directed everyone before/during play.

Willis was the defensive captain. He was the leader and best player. He ran that defense. I respectfully disagree

2019 offense is cleaner, better executing than 2011 had. as robz said, the reliability of frank gore was nice, esp running behind staley and prime iupati. but its not like we've really seen the niners struggling getting that yard. juszczyk and kittle are elite blockers in their own right (so was vernon).

ed lover points out that this D struggles with running qb's but thats where the linebackers i i brought up would come in handy. i just said their front was more physical back in 2011, not that the team was better top to bottom

Agree about the LB's. 3-4 is much better at containing that type of threat. I still disagree about the physical take. In a 3-4 all those guys really need to do up front is occupy blockers and space, while the LB's make the plays. Remember that Aldon was an outside LB in that scheme rather than a classic edge rusher. While he would occasionally get down in a 3 point stance, he was mostly upright and would move from side to side depending on the situation. I actually had to go and look up the names of the Niner front 3 that year. Isaac Sopoaga, Ray McDonald, and Justin Smith. Smith was definitely nasty, but the other guys were just there to be fat and take up space. Smith had also lost a step by then and wasn't what he was. Imo, you can't say they were more physical when this years bunch is so much more productive. They in eat Olines alive. Bosa has 7 sacks. Armstead has 8. Dee Ford has 6.5 (and didn't play last night,) while Buckner has 5. Who do you double? It's the best Dline in the NFL, hands down. Bosa absolutely trucked that poor RT twice last night, and they made ARod look old and slow... While blitzing on maybe 10% of the plays, if not less. If they stay healthy and stay together they have the potential to be all time great.

Nobody has contained them, only tricked them. Kingsbury and his got gimmick offense, which does all kinds of misdirection stuff, along with their midget, overrated QB, were perfect for the overly aggressive Niner D. I'll give him credit for exploiting them. Twice. Seahawks also did well, so the template is there. Screens, quick releases, misdirection, and good ole unpredictable ninja ball where the QB does some athletic, Serengeti type , can exploit this. Which is why the Ravens game is must see TV. I actually think the Ravens will win, tbh. Early, east coast start plus Lamar might be too much unless the Niners get out in front> Think Saleh has to blitz a lot more, particularly from the edge, if the Niners want to win.

Niner initial push is as good as I've seen in a while. All four of those guys were often 2-3 yards in the backfield at the same time last night, and every time I watch them. Would kill for that type of tenacity on my teams Dline

#17 for GB scores to make it 6-23 and he's in dancing. what a scrub

So cringe. His lineman is standing there waiting for him to get his tiny brain back in the game

Ravens will likely win for the reasons you stated plus the game is sandwiched between two NFC hurdles. I only ask for 2/3 in this gauntlet. But lose the finale in Seattle and these games are all but pointless.

Justin Smith wasn't the same after tearing his triceps against the Patriots. NE made a big come back falling short and the defense in general was never the same in 2012, had to outscore opponents. Which is argument in favor of Harbaugh making the QB switch.

    Harbaugh making the QB switch.
I remember thinking he had to as well back then. But I also remember thinking that Kaep would get found out... And so he did. The Ravens are incredibly similar to that Niner team, and will end up having the same problems. Eventually there will be enough film, and there's no way in the Pats will make the same mistakes twice should they meet again in the playoffs. At Foxboro. In January. Ravens strength, as usual, is on their O/D lines and controlling the ball. But if they get behind and can't run...

That said, I haven't seen the Ravens that much this year and I have a bias against running QB's. History backs me up in this bias. Lamar will eventually have to play from behind and win a game with his arm when its do or die. i don't think he can. I also think they've been the beneficiary of a ty AFC north and getting some favorable scheduling. I might be wrong but I doubt it. Be interesting to see how the Rams fare against them tonight. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they win. Rams D is still very, very good. They just have Goff and a wholly inferior Oline to what they had last year. lol, imagine paying Jared Goff all that money

Kaepernick had an unorthodox baseball throwing motion that he supposedly worked to fix but he ultimately lacked touch on his passes. It was all fastballs. He especially struggled on throws along the sidelines which made those constant end zone fades moronic. I remember a 49er fan broke down the data and Kaep to Crabtree fade route in the end zone had awful success rate. But they keep running that crap and in the most important playoff moments.

the DL is better and deeper this year, the LBs were better in 2011-2013. the secondary, better this year. Offense better this year. Alex Smith offenses can be stopped with man and hard flat defense because he won't beat you deep. Kaepernick was tougher to stop because he could do everything... run, scramble, throw short, throw deep, but his accuracy was really inconsistent which ultimately hurt the Niners at critical times.

maybe not... Ravens win the tiebreaker so they just need to finish with the same number of losses. Patriots still have the texans and chiefs

this effectively eliminates the Rams from playoff contention. that division alone is a problem.

seahawks, 49ers, saints, cowboys, vikings, packers. Not much drama of who will get in this year tbh.
