Interesting....I wonder if J-Simmons would've made more money if he stayed with the Spurs.Ultimately there is no reason to feel bad for him, he got greedy and forced his way out of San Antonio because he was more interested in getting paid then continuing to build on what he had accomplished in the underdog role. He got paid by Orlando and hasn't really played well enough to justify that contract since...

Scrub who the Spurs placed in a position to show just enough to get paid. He was as developed as he was ever going to be at that age, but Orlando thought there was still more. They were wrong.

Left San Antonio to put up empty stats in Orlando. Declined LeBron's offer to play him with in Cleveland, guaranteed trip to the finals. Amazing.

He was not an nba player outside of the Spurs system, but really happy for him that he had his moment in the sun and made money for his family. It was one of the cooler stories you will ever see with how it all happened.
Dude earned his way onto a Spurs roster. Then he got offered more money to play in Orlando. Guys like him need to get that guaranteed money quickly because they have no promise they will be in the league long term.
I think Pop told him to leave San Antonio to get paid as much as he could.

I kinda liked his play, but realized he was probably at his ceiling opportunity with the Spurs==and he realized it too. He had an opportunity to cash in on his play with the Spurs and made more money than staying here. All sentiment aside, he made the right decision at his age to cash in on a brief window of opportunity. Good for him.
I don't get why he's being talked about like he was some sort of scrub. He was talented. Athletic, could attack the basket, ran the pnr well, had a midrange game, was developing a 3pt shot in his last year in SA, had defensive potential (his D on Harden in the playoffs was a glimpse).
It's not like he lacked talent and the Spurs system hid it. I think what he needed was the structure here. Doesn't seem like the most mature or smartest guy. He'd probably be starting at SG right now if had stayed, imo.
But he made his choice and it wasn't the right one, tbh.
He was a classic example of style over substance. He made some spectacular dunks, he had some flashy attacks to the basket, he looked like he tried on defense, but at no point of his career did any of that resulted on positive impact on the basketball court.
He played 4 seasons in the NBA, he never posted positive impact numbers on any of them. Neither in offense nor defense. He was just very mediocre. His only average (or above average) NBA skill was athleticism.
He likely would have made less. I don't know about any "offer" to come play with LeBron, but Simmons did the right thing for him and his family in getting paid. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity for a guy like him. The guy had to pay for his own audition in Austin FFS, and he got almost $14M in total salary from his time in the league. If the Spurs had made him available at the start of free agency that year, he might have gotten double that. I think the Spurs were going to try to keep him on the cheap, but that was the year of the real salary cap craziness. I could almost guarantee that the Spurs would have only partially guaranteed him for years 2 and 3. As it is, he got 2 full years and a partial for this year.
What the article doesn't mention is that he was pretty good that first year in Orlando, and started something like 50 games. He got hurt the next year, and was really never the same. The guy that played in Orlando that first year would have been a good addition to the roster at the right price. You guys talking like he would have been bad for the team are full of . If he played like he did that first year in Orlando, the Spurs would be lucky to have him right now - especially compared to Beli.
Whoever it was above who said he went to "chase empty stats" in Orlando, GTFO. A guy who had to pay for his own audition found a way to get paid $14M. There's not a person here who wouldn't chase empty stats for that kind of payday. Good for him.

Half the league is mediocre, if you're comparing to the rest of the players. Pretty much by definition. The ones who are better than mediocre get paid a LOT more than the $875K he made in his second season here.
He's better than 80% of our roster tbh
