Dude, Argentina was close to the 1:1, of course it was a hard game until the 66th minute.

And Brazil beat themselves, it wasnt holland beating them. Holland was DEAD until the 55th minute.

Yeah, but they got an early goal, and the pressure shifted to Argentina. Same thing happened against England.

I agree that Spain's defense is better than Argentina's, but for all the fanfare of team football and what not, they couldn't create anything for any long stretch this entire game.

This Spanish team reminds me of the 99' Spurs championship team. They just squeeze the life outta you with defense and ball possession. There's really very little teams could do to stop Spain's ball possession. I guess you could try to injure and take out Xavi and Iniesta, cause they're the masterminds of the passing game which frustrates opponents and casual fans.

I agree Brazil choked, but you still have to give Holland credit for taking advantage of it. Paraguay had Spain on the ropes and could of gone for the kill but Casillas bailed out Spain big time with that save against Paraguay.

TBH, not to take anything away from Spain, but teams that pushed their defense made it tremble at times. Germany was wayyyyy too passive today. I mean, Paraguay probably had more chances against Spain than the Germans.
Look back at this thread, and you'll see a comment from ffadicted while the game was still going wondering if germany was just going to lay down and lose.

Spain's dominant ball possession is their Defense. It's boring and frustrating to watch but effective.

Very good game by Spain; by far their best in this tournament. Germany had a great run, but today they lost to the better team.
Spain doesn't look invincible on the defensive end, but Germany weren't able to put pressure on them. Puyol is a beast - if he were a basketball player, this guy would be Spurs material.

I'm really looking forward to the finale. Sneijder and Villa, arguably the two best players of this WC, and their respective teams going head to head.

ball possession =/= defense. Spain's defense is like a ing block of swiss cheese man, it looks great while they have the ball and the other team isn't pressing, but there are so many easily exploitable holes. The one small stretch in the second half where germany really pressed the ball they got 3 or 4 good chances in the span of around 5 minutes. Trust me on this, spain right now is like a poor man's version of a 90's/early 00's brasil team, except with a good keeper lol

With that said, Holland isn't exactly a model team when it comes to attacking in their opponent's 1/3, so we'll see what happens.

Congrats to Spain! The better team won without a doubt.

That said, you cannot blame Germany for playing bad. Spain was simply THAT good. Their dominance relates to their gread midfield. They are so stable and so strong that you could not even foul them to set an example. If Kroos makes that goal the game might go differently but in the end the better team won.

I am still proud of the team. They have been together in that lineup for like 6-8 weeks. All the injuries forced the coach to change the lineup a number of times. Most of the players will be able to play at least 2 more WC. I am looking forward to that.

They should now focus on the EC... they will have a good chance to win it.

What pisses me off is watching the two yellow cards of Müller and then watching van Bommel fouling for 3 cards in every game...

And no, Müller is no excuse, but that cards where piss cards and they stole his SF.
Yeah, the yellow cards were a bad joke. But don't blame van Bommel for not getting punished by the refs.

To become a World champion, you need to face those tough defensive games that allow you to grow mentally stronger, and to fully trust your teammates and your abilities. Spain had that game against Paraguay and Holland against Brazil.
Yeah, but we had the game against Ghana. Facing elimination and Ghana only playing defense. I thought that game made us mentally very strong. And we showed it against the likes of England and Argentina.

Congrats to Spain! The better team won without a doubt.

Very good post! My thoughts exactly. EC will be very interesting with us, Holland, Spain being favorites.

It's very sad that the next WC is in Brasil. I don't think that we can win it there.

I will move next year to brazil, so it will be a homecup for me too.

I really wonder how brazil will handle the pressure. Everyone in there will except them to win the le, nothing else. The pressure will be so crucial.

Yesterday was big brother against small brother. Spain (specially their midfield) is there where we wanna be soon (or where we are on the way). Their midfield is together since years, a few since the youth years at Barca.

I can see Germany being in 2-4 years on that level. Specially if Bayern get Khedira next year, would help a lot to have a huge Bayern midfield block like spain has with Barca.

Interesting Fact about the Germans: "Of course, the last of those German victories was over Argentina. And since 1994, the team that has eliminated Argentina has itself been knocked out in its next game."

On the other hand, if Villa or Puyol score in the first half, this game might have been over even sooner.
