    huh?
I'm not talking about that one comment. I'm talking about all day, everyday. If someone's line of thinking doesn't go along with yours, you are rude is . I get complaints about it almost every single day, but I always ignore it because you are pregnant and I say to give you a break. But since Blaze brought it out into the open, I figured you might as well know. Maybe you can check your at ude a little bit and think before you type.

Back to your regular scheduled programming.

Myself and a bunch of people at work are going to a shelter in Dallas on Monday to cook a hot meal for a bunch of refugees that have taken up shelter there. Wish I could come up with room for some folks to stay at my place, but I don't exactly have a lot of room, just a couch

That's very commendable. If everyone can just give a little (volunteering or financially) and do what they can, it will make a big difference.

11:58 A.M. - SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah's religious congregations are working with national relief organizations to help ship relief supplies to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints finished loading the last of fourteen trucks headed for the area yesterday. Pallets of sleeping bags, tents and other relief supplies were transferred from the Mormon church's central storehouse to trucks headed to Louisiana and Mississippi.Church spokesman Dale Bills says several LDS church buildings in the area are being used as emergency shelters, as well.

    Awlright, Mormons!

SW- got mad at them not giving water or helping in other ways. But she's not called "condescending" is she?
That's because she isn't. You, on the other hand, do so damn near everytime you post.

Do you know how to treat a dialysis patient? CNN reported that the police were unable to help since they had nothing.

Maybe what you should do is take yourself to NO, pop out that kid of yours and you two can walk around teaching first aid to everybody.

Then, when that's all done, you can whip up your 48275920174 pancakes in 20 minutes to feed everybody remaining at the Superdome. I'm sure Costco would help you out since you're on their frequent flour plan.

Until then, teach a training class to journalists and STFU.

As a matter of fact, we've got an editorial board meeting tonight at 6. I'll open up the floor to you to teach us first aid in case we ever get caught and need it.

Hardberger said County Judge Nelson Wolff was taking steps to house people in Freeman Coliseum where the main building and most of the outlying buildings are air-conditioned. Perry is trying to get air conditioners for the buildings that are not, Hardberger added.

Actually under martial law they can do that. However you'd end up with the quack jobs like Sheehan saying that Bush signed off on death warrants for the poor in NO at the hands of our government.
Well, if Cindy Sheehan isn't careful, she's going to end up with a cap right between the eyes. People's tolerance for that bull in a national crisis is really small.

There are maybe a couple thousand violent thugs roaming around. There are 60,000 people trapped in the city. After the first hundred criminals get killed, order will be restored really fast, and there might be a chance to get people out.

You hear what's happening. People are starting to drop dead left and right.

What's so sad is that for years they've known that this was going to happen, and they knew that they didn't have the resources to deal with it, and still nothing was done. They knew they weren't prepared, and it shows.

Nobody even had the foresight to build up enough high ground somewhere to put a command center that would not itself be devastated by the floodwaters. And now we have a situation where a staggering number of people are going to die -- not from storm surge, not from drowning, but from hunger, thirst, disease, and violence days if not weeks after the storm blew through.

Not only is there no central plan, there's really no way to execute one now.

The Red Cross will come do it for free (or a small fee/donation), and certify you in first aid (so you can't get sued by trying to help someone). They are stretched thin right now, but I recommend you set this up for whatever groups you belong to. They should also have classes on the campus for you to do this in.

I have to be quite honest, at this point I would not oppose ROE that allow guardmen more freedom to shoot people. These people are directly putting the others at risk and by doing so forfeit any sympathy from me.

Those of you who know me know what takes quite a ing bit.

I agree. There's a lot of folks dying right now due to the actions of a few SOB's with firearms. But methinks that after a couple of troublemakers are shot though, you're running the risk of a full-scale riot. I hope the Guardsmen are considering that.

When was the last time Guardsmen opened fire on US citizens? Kent State?

    not attack each other.
and I felt attacked for my opinion about a news reporter. So I bit back. shoot me.
Obiwan, I just heard the reporter in question talking about the incident. He said a group of people were trying to help the man and tried holding his head up and administering any kind of aid. It just didn't work.

    Despair grips New Orleans
    From staff and wire reports

As a tired, hungry and frustrated crowd chanted ``Help us! Help us! Help us!'' in front of the New Orleans Convention Center this morning, someone pulled back a filthy blanket to reveal a gray-haired man slumped dead in a lawn chair.

All around, the 8,000 or so refugees in this uninhabitable city stretched in a long line across down Convention Center Boulelvard, demanding help from police and military who kept moving past.

"They treat us like animals,'' said Angela Perkins, who had fallen to her knees, clasped her hands and screamed out a prayer. "They can send me anywhere. They can send me to Africa.''

Kevin Clark, 10, who had come to the center with his grandfather, Isaac, described the horror so many people are facing here.

"I'm scared,'' he said. "I slept on the ground last night. I don't have anything to eat. The last time I ate was Monday.''

Desperate New Orleans residents were flocking to the Superdome today, hoping for a spot on a bus to Houston's Astrodome. But the scene at the Superdome -- the shelter of last resort for up to 23,000 people -- became increasingly chaotic as the swelling crowd made it difficult for buses to get through.

Paramedics became alarmed by the sight of people with guns. The evacuation of fragile refugees, who were supposed to be airlifted to the Astrodome, ground to a halt when medical personnel received reports of gunfire and as trash fires outside the Superdome fanned unfounded fears of arson.

Richard Zuschlag, chief of Acadian Ambulance, said it had become too dangerous for his pilots. Zeuschlag said paramedics were calling him and crying for help because they were so scared of people with guns at the Superdome. He also said that during the night, when a medical evacuation helicopter tried to land at a hospital in the outlying town of Kenner, the pilot reported 100 people were on the landing pad, some with guns.

"He was frightened and would not land,'' Zeuschlag.

Despite the angry crowds, however, the bus evacuations continued.

Superdome refugees had lined up for the first buses, some inching along in wheelchairs, some carrying babies. Almost everyone carried a plastic bag or bundled bedspread holding the few possessions they had left. Many had no idea where they were heading.

"We tried to find out. We're pretty much adrift right now,'' said Cyril Ellisworth, 46. "We're pretty much adrift in life. They tell us to line up and go, and we just line up and go.''

Not everyone in New Orleans was following directions, however.

Managers at the Covenant Home nursing center were prepared to cope with power outages and supply shortages following Hurricane Katrina. They weren't ready for looters.

The nursing home lost its bus after the driver surrendered it to carjackers. Groups of people then drove by the center, shouting to residents, ``Get out!''

On Wednesday, 80 residents, most of them in wheelchairs, were evacuated to other nursing homes in the state.

"We had excellent plans. We had enough food for 10 days,'' said Peggy Hoffman, the home's executive director. "Now we'll have to equip our department heads with guns and teach them how to shoot.''

Looters around New Orleans threatened survivors and ransacked stores. Some were desperate for food - others just wanted beer and TVs.

The risk to safety prompted Mayor Ray Nagin to order virtually all the city's 1,500 police officers to leave their search-and-rescue mission and return to the streets to stop the thefts that turned more hostile as the city plunged deeper into chaos.

"They are starting to get closer to heavily populated areas - hotels, hospitals, and we're going to stop it right now,'' Nagin said.

Amid the turmoil on Wednesday, thieves commandeered a forklift and used it to push up the storm shutters and break the glass of a pharmacy. A crowd stormed the store, carrying out so much water and food that it dropped from their arms as they ran. The street was littered with packages of ramen noodles and other items.

New Orleans' homeland security chief, Terry Ebbert, said looters were breaking into stores all over town and stealing guns. He said there are gangs of armed men moving around the city. At one point, officers stranded on the roof of a hotel were fired at by people on the street.

Authorities said another officer was shot in the head and a looter was wounded in a shootout. Both were expected to survive.

Looters also chased down a state police truck full of food. The New Orleans police chief ran off looters while city officials themselves were commandeering equipment from a looted Office Depot. During a state of emergency, authorities have broad powers to take private supplies and buildings for their use.
Chronicle staffer Dale Lezon and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

    And I agree 200%

What I'm really having a hard time comprehending is that these people aren't even helping themselves. I mean, what do they think? That everything will be back to normal in NO in a few days and they can enjoy the fruits of their labor?

They are going to die if they don't get out of there, too. It's not debateable. The conditions are only going to get worse.

I live in Virginia and it's not my own place. I'm a guest here...so, I'm currently sort of homeless myself, but fortunately I have a nice place to stay.

Anyone watching CNN over the past hour? I hate to say it, but I'm starting to agree with that BBC reporter I was complaining about. The one who said our governments reaction was a disgrace. There are entire neighborhoods who haven't eaten for three days and apparantly there is no presence of any kind of official to keep people informed or to give direction. Very little food and water has been distributed. Not even in the Superdome. I am shocked.
