I've tried giving them the benefit of the doubt, but it is starting to get very ominous torwards the reaction. It's too soon to know how well they are handling it though.

What's so sad is that for years they've known that this was going to happen, and they knew that they didn't have the resources to deal with it, and still nothing was done. They knew they weren't prepared, and it shows.

Nobody even had the foresight to build up enough high ground somewhere to put a command center that would not itself be devastated by the floodwaters. And now we have a situation where a staggering number of people are going to die -- not from storm surge, not from drowning, but from hunger, thirst, disease, and violence days if not weeks after the storm blew through.

Not only is there no central plan, there's really no way to execute one now.
Probably one of the most maddening realities that we are seeing today. It's pretty obvious the federal government, despite all its BS studies and plans and practice exercises, still isn't ready for a tragedy like this.

They need to bring in mobile communications equipment from the military, get up some mobile communications aircraft that can relay cell phone messages, etc over NO and south Alabama and Mississippi.

Strap speakers to helos to advise people in the cities where to go for help, etc.

And deploy the NG and police to deal with the looters with a shoot on site order. Any er with a gun running around looting gets capped. Judge, jury, executioner all at once.

The only good thing about the looters is that they aren't doing anything to save themselves, and like Kori said - God has a plan for them. Namely, death in their home city. And to that I say good ing riddance.

If you want to sign your own death sentence, fine, but don't jack with the rescue and police personnel who are trying to save the ones who want to get out.

Anyone watching CNN over the past hour? I hate to say it, but I'm starting to agree with that BBC reporter I was complaining about. The one who said our governments reaction was a disgrace. There are entire neighborhoods who haven't eaten for three days and apparantly there is no presence of any kind of official to keep people informed or to give direction. Very little food and water has been distributed. Not even in the Superdome. I am shocked.
Well for one london was once burning from nazi bombers and USA bail them out with food .. it took a long time to bring the food across the ocean.

THEY HAVE NOT been in a situation like this.. there are lot of people with aid but they can't get to the Scene..

Now please don't let the mainstream media bring you down.. BBC is mostly anti Bush staff that means that they hate YOU too for the moment..

Obiwan, I just heard the reporter in question talking about the incident. He said a group of people were trying to help the man and tried holding his head up and administering any kind of aid. It just didn't work.

yeah, I just saw that update too... almost missed it i was gonna switch to FOX.
I was glad to hear that peopel were trying to help.
I can;t imagine what that poor man has been goign thru these past few days but I'm sure he appreciated the human touch.

That's why I can't believe that the federal response to this was yesterday afternoon. Even all of us MMQB's in here have been talking about how bad Katrina (and her aftermath) was since Sunday.

Oh, and load up boats and choppers with water and MREs. When you rescue someone from a rooftop, hand them a bottle of water and an MRE.

This thing is a complete cluster all the way around from a state, local, and federal government standpoint.

It appears the idea is to rescue them, get them to dry land, get them to the Superdome, get them out of the area to shelters.

That I have no problem with, but all that takes time and logistics. In the meantime you've got to give them some fluids and some food, particularly the fluids part. A human can survive over a week without food, but the water is the biggie.

    .

To be fair, we can't say "supplies" click our heels, snap our fingers and they will show up. Its a logistical nightmare trying to get food and water to so much. All the supplies have to be brought in and distributed....trying to get to people has been the biggest problem. People have become desperate and that makes it worse. We can't just say "well the government isn't doing enough" This is a long drawn out process and I have a sinking feeling that its about to get really really ugly.

    me too.
thats why I was really surprised during the white house press briefing, when pressed by a reporter about the difference between tpeople looting for food and suppplies and peopel looting for tv's and stuff.. the guy just said that there was zero tolerance and that there was no reason for them to be looting for food & water since they were coordinating efforts to bring food to the area.

i just thought that was a bit one dimensional.

that is a good idea. With all the boats that people own in Texas and Louisiana, you could come up with a lot of help.

Like I said - hand everyone you rescue an MRE and a bottle of water. It ain't much, but it's a start.

I have to scratch my head at the Convention Center people though. Fox talked to some guy yesterday that said "we just came here, too many people at the Superdome, we figure if enough of us gather here the government will come for us."

All the staging and resources are at the Superdome, you've got to go there instead of "make my own place for the government to come, and expect them to show up with bells and whistles on."

believe me, I am the biggest BBC hater there is, but if you've been watching CNN for the last hour, you have got to be stunned. We are not a third world country. We should be able to handle this. The area they have new footage of is around the convention center. It's all dry land, no flooding in site. The streets are clear - except for the trash and dead bodies and thousands of people near riot screaming for help. There are people passed out all over the place. You can't tell who is dead or who is asleep.
There is an elderly woman - clearly dead - in a wheelchair who has been propped up against a wall. People either passed out or near to collapse are lying next to her. The living are laying next to the dying. There are no relief trucks, no police, no rescuers in site.
I understand they can't get to everyone on the roofs right away. But this is a dry area. I have no words...

    WWL Blog:

12:38 P.M. - (AP): Two French Quarter hotels says federal officials have foiled their plans to hire buses to ferry guests to higher ground.

The general manager of the Astor Hotel at Astor Crowne Plaza says the hotels teamed to hire ten buses to carry some 500 guests.

But Peter Ambros says federal officials commandeered the buses, and told the guests to join thousands of other evacuees at the New Orleans convention center.

One man says he and others had paid $45 a seat for the buses, and that they were "totally stunned" when the buses never arrived. Another woman said the crowd had waited 14 hours for the buses. She says the idea of walking to the convention center scared her because of reports of looting.

The woman says it appears Louisiana officials have forgotten about tourists, and are just intent on getting their own residents out.

the looting bit. The store owner was going to report everything "unsalvagable" anyway. Businesses are still collecting from their insurances. If I have NO food.No clothes.I haven't taken a bath in 4 days.My Debit card will not work.I have no where to go. -- don't expect anyone to be waiting patiently for Bush to send anyone soon!

It will be easier to find Osama than to fix LA. "Dead or Alive"

It's now conceivable that we will be paying $5 a gallon before the year ends here in TX.

In case anyone in national security is reading this, get the word to President Bush that we need the military in here NOW. The Active Duty Armed Forces. Mr. President, we are losing this city. I don't care what you're hearing on the news. The city is being lost. It is the law of the jungle down here. The command and control structure here is barely functioning. I'm not sure it's anyone's fault -- I'm not sure it could be any other way at this point. We need the kind of logistical support and infrastructure only the Active Duty military can provide. The hospitals are in dire straights. The police barely have any capabilities at this point. The National Guard is doing their best, but the situation is not being contained. I'm here to help in anyway I can, but my capabilities are limited and dropping. Please get the military here to maintain order before this city is lost.
