And yet the running game sucks
Disappointing for sure, especially after seeing them do whatever they wanted against Michigan's DL.
Teams are going to make Ewers beat them.
also doesn't help when sark keeps running RPOs with a QB that isn't a keep threat
Imo its a number of things and what you guys mentioned.
Its a outside zone blocking scheme which is more difficult and because there is more east west you gain a lot or nothing or get minus yardage. It varies much more than a scheme with tighter fits and manning up more. We do not have a 3 or 4 yard plan and a cloud of dust.
The loss of Baxter really hurt. It is quite apparent imo that Wisner gets tired and beat up. Blue is just not a tough runner at this stage, and the freshman has been injured and apparently is the worst at pass pro.
The most disappointing part is pass pro. Which also involves the QB moving slyly in the pocket since Ewers is not a threat to hurt you running for the vast majority of the game. If Ewers feels uncomfortable, he wont step up and he wont throw the ball away. He goes turtle mode and drops his head ready to lay down. He readily takes chunk losses in yardage. This is what everyone will be looking for every game from here on out. How does he feel in the pocket today. I would always apply pressure by playing tricks on the oline just to get Ewers uncomfortable asap.
I do think if Ewers gets an open field to his right on the run he is very good at scanning the field and making super accurate throws like he does on bubble screens.
Any other observations you guys have would be appreciated. Like where you think he ends up in the draft.
Really surprised by this, he would've been a starter next season for sure
Not so sure he would start. He had a good opportunity this year and did not take advantage. Best of luck to him. Might be good for both parties to have have a fresh start.
not a shocker. dropping passes and lazy blocking pretty much made him useless in this offense
Which is a strange game plan for defenses unless they don't believe Ewers is really that good
I think teams are taking their chances with Texas' inconsistent vertical game, especially since Ewers has returned from injury.
Smart and Georgia obviously took one look at the Oklahoma film and knew immediately how they would attack.
He definitely looked more comfortable overall against Vanderbilt, but I don't expect defenses to go away from that strategy unless Ewers can open it up early and the slow starts stop happening.
Cook was hinting earlier on social media that he's looking at Oregon.
IT on WR Johntay Cook II leaving the team:
"This is Occam's razor: Lack of playing time affected his at ude, the at ude further affected his playing time. It just spiraled. Move on."
I think Golden would need to go pro for Cook to start next year.
Moore seems to have the slot locked down now, and Cook isn't starting over Wingo.
My guess is the staff will be going after a talented Bond replacement in the portal too.
I personally think Golden will come back to increase his draft position. I think the starters next year will be Wingo, Golden and Moore.....unless grab another Bond type from the portal. Locket, Ffrench, Livingstone and Butler (who I'm very interested to see) will be fighting for time.
Good point.
Seems the last three games? started with a batted Ewers pass and an interception.
Ewer’s movement in the pocket does not make it easy for our OTs (the OTs have had blow byes as well)
Yeah I think this might indeed be the simplest explanation.
Sark plays hardball. But not so much at QB as he and Ewers invested a lot of effort on making things work.
Im kinda sad because I think Manning had a bit of a connection with Cook. (Small sample though.)
I remember an interview with Moore this summer and he talked about how he was going work hard and do all the little things to earn his time. Fast forward to today and it's apparent all that hard work paid off for him. He said he was going to start and he is. That is the kind of player you love
Not the 1st time a highly rated player doesn't work out and it won't be the last. He stayed out of trouble and until recently was very vocal about his love for UT. Wish him luck and hope he turns it around.
Damn that sucks, wish him the best and hope it works our for him wherever he goes
Good observation, and doesn't sound like Cook is necessarily in that category.
No matter the real reason, attrition is inevitable on a roster filled with blue-chips fighting for playing time.
Factor in NIL and portal additions, it gets even more complicated.
