Tesla sales drop in Europe for fifth month in a row

NEW YORK -- Europeans still aren't buying Teslas with figures out Wednesday showing sales plunged for a fifth month in a row in May, a blow to investors who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now.

Tesla sales fell 28% last month in 30 European countries even as the overall market for electric vehicles expanded sharply, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The poor showing comes after Tesla's billionaire CEO had promised a “major rebound” was coming last month, adding to a recent buying frenzy among investors.

They were selling on Wednesday, pushing the prices down more than 4% in early afternoon trading.

Musk had said Tesla was sure to get a boost once the company was done retooling its factories to produce a new version of its biggest seller, the Model Y. But that was finished months ago, and the new models are widely available. Investors are now hoping that a cheaper Tesla expected to be out later year will help reverse the sales decline.

Overall, battery electric vehicle sales rose 25% in Europe compared to a year earlier. The market for EVs was particularly strong in Germany, where Musk has angered potential buyers by publicly supporting the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party in elections. Overall EV sales there leapt 45%.

China’s Xiaomi undercuts Tesla with yet another cheaper car

BEIJING — Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi is taking aim straight at rival Tesla with a new electric SUV.

Xiaomi’s luxury YU7 SUV will start at 253,500 yuan ($35,322), CEO Lei Jun said Thursday, pointing out that the vehicle is 10,000 yuan cheaper than Tesla’s Model Y, which starts at 263,500 yuan in China.

Prior to the official price announcement, a Citi report had listed expectations that the YU7 SUV would be priced around 250,000 yuan to 320,000 yuan ($34,800 to $44,590), forecasting monthly sales of about 30,000 units. Once the pace picks up, Citi predicts annual sales of 300,000 to 360,000 units.

Xiaomi’s company’s SU7 sedan launched last year was also priced below Tesla’s Model 3.

Lei on Thursday claimed the YU7 beat Tesla’s Model Y on a range of metrics, but still came short on driver assist. The YU7 comes with driver-assist software, the most advanced version of which is powered by Nvidia’s Thor chip. Pre-sales start at 10 p.m. on Thursday, with deliveries expected within one to five weeks.

EU car market: more e-cars again in May, Tesla and combustion engines plummet

    ...
In May, battery electric cars had a market share of 15.4 percent in the EU, significantly more than in May 2024 with 12.1 percent. Last month, almost 142,800 battery-electric cars were newly registered in the EU, corresponding to an increase of 25 percent. This increase confirms the trend of the first five months, in which electric car registrations rose by more than 26 percent.

By contrast, the previously strong electric car brand Tesla recorded a decline of more than 40 percent. Only, 8729 of the brand's models were registered. Tesla attributes the slump to the model revision of its best-selling model, the Tesla Model Y (test), which has only just been launched on the market. However, market observers assume that the majority of the reluctance to buy can be attributed to the erratic actions of company boss Elon Musk alongside the US President.

Tesla's deliveries drop again as compe ion, Musk backlash hit demand

(Reuters) -Tesla (TSLA) posted another big drop in quarterly deliveries on Wednesday, putting it on course for its second straight annual sales decline as demand falters due to backlash over CEO Elon Musk's political stance and an aging vehicle lineup.

Still, shares of the electric automaker jumped 3% in early trading as the decline proved less severe than the bleakest analyst projections.

Tesla said it delivered 384,122 vehicles in the second quarter, down 13.5% from 443,956 units a year ago.

Analysts expected it to report deliveries of about 394,378 vehicles, according to an average of 23 estimates from Visible Alpha, though projections went to as low as 360,080 units based on estimates from 10 analysts over the past month.

General Motors' EV Sales Doubled As Tesla's Shrank

General Motors is on a tear. Its electric vehicle sales more than doubled in the second quarter, hitting 46,280 units.

The carmaker sold some 114,000 EVs in the U.S. last year, crossing the 100,000-unit mark for the first time. That momentum carried on in the first several months of 2025, on the back of new models like the Cadillac Escalade IQ and Optiq. In the first half of 2025, GM says it sold some 78,000 EVs, amounting to a 13% share of the electric market.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV, launched last year with a $34,995 starting price and over 300 miles of range, is the real hero of GM's lineup. In the first half of 2025, GM says it sold more than 27,000 of them. The company says it's on track to become one of the top three most popular electric cars in the U.S. so far this year. Indeed, it passed the Ford Mustang Mach-E in the first half to become the best-selling non-Tesla EV in America.

Meanwhile Tesla, by far the U.S. EV sales leader, is struggling. Cox Automotive estimates that its U.S. sales dropped by 20% in Q2 as it grapples with an aging lineup, no truly affordable model and the controversial politics of its CEO, Elon Musk. Tesla's slump is the primary driver of a 6% drop in sales across America's EV market in Q2, Cox says.

Panasonic delays full production at US battery plant as Tesla sales drop

OSAKA -- Tesla supplier Panasonic Holdings has backpedaled on its internal goal for electric vehicle battery production at a U.S. factory in the state of Kansas, Nikkei has learned.

While the Japanese electronics giant was initially aiming for full production of an annual 30 gigawatt-hours by the end of March 2027, it will postpone the target date.

Tesla, Panasonic's biggest customer for EV batteries, is struggling with dwindling sales, and U.S. President Donald Trump has been a skeptic on the issue of providing sizable funding to encourage widespread EV adoption.

With uncertainty surrounding its battery business, Panasonic has decided to change tack.

Panasonic invested about $4 billion to build the Kansas plant, which is its second battery plant in the U.S., after one in Nevada.

Tesla's global sales in the April-June quarter decreased 13% from a year earlier to 384,122 vehicles, according to its announcement on July 2. Political strife between CEO Elon Musk and Trump has raised alarms about the automaker's business outlook.

Musk’s X refuses to hand over data in ‘politically motivated’ French investigation

Elon Musk’s X on Monday denied allegations made by French authorities as part of a criminal investigation into alleged data tampering, adding that it would not submit to the prosecutor’s demand to hand over data.

X’s global government affairs account said the French investigation, which ramped up this month, is “politically-motivated” and designed to “restrict free speech.”

“French authorities have launched a politically-motivated criminal investigation into X over the alleged manipulation of its algorithm and alleged “fraudulent data extraction,” X said in a post on the social media platform. “X categorically denies these allegations.”

French prosecutors started an investigation in January over allegations that the company’s algorithm was being used for the purposes of foreign interference. The probe began after two complaints — one from a French member of parliament and another from a senior official at a public ins ution.

This month, the investigation was handed over to a key unit of France’s national police. Prosecutors said the investigation would focus on investigating offences of tampering with automated data systems as well as the fraudulent extraction of data from these systems.

Tesla reports sales miss as auto revenue drops for second straight quarter

    ...
Auto revenue for Tesla came in at $16.7 billion in the second quarter, down from $19.9 billion in the same quarter last year. Of that sum, revenue from sales of auto regulatory credits declined to $439 million from $890 million a year earlier.

In early July, Tesla reported a 14% year-over-year slide in vehicle deliveries to 384,000 for the second quarter. Deliveries are the closest approximation of EV sales reported by Tesla but aren’t precisely defined in its shareholder communications.

    "bots aren't fake"

This week, Super Bowl 2024 shattered records, with the NFL championship broadcast on CBS becoming the most-watched televised event in U.S. history.

Also riding high from the big game? Elon Musk's X. The company formerly known as Twitter published its own press release, lauding Super Bowl LVIII as one of the biggest events ever on the social media platform with more than 10 billion impressions and over 1 billion video views.

However, it appears that a significant portion of that traffic on X could be fake, according to data provided to Mashable by CHEQ, a leading cybersecurity firm that tracks bots and fake users.

According to CHEQ, a whopping 75.85 percent of traffic from X to its advertising clients' websites during the weekend of the Super Bowl was fake.

Tesla sales drop again around Europe despite Model Y revamp

The brand's registrations - a close proxy of sales - fell 86% year-on-year in July to 163 cars in Sweden, 52% to 336 cars in Denmark, 27% to 1,307 in France and 62% to 443 in the Netherlands, official industry data showed, marking a seventh straight monthly drop in all of those countries.

Tesla sales dropped by over a third in Europe in the first six months of the year.

Norway and Spain bucked the trend, with Tesla's registrations up 83% and 27% to 838 cars and 702 cars, respectively.

Spain recorded a 155% jump in total sales of electrified cars - either battery electric or plug-in hybrid. Tesla's Chinese compe or BYD (002594.SZ), opens new tab sold 2,158 cars in Spain in July, almost eight times more than in July 2024.

Jury orders Tesla to pay more than US$200 million in Autopilot crash case

MIAMI — A Miami jury decided that Elon Musk’s car company Tesla was partly responsible for a deadly crash in Florida involving its Autopilot driver assist technology and must pay the victims more than US$200 million in punitive damages.

The federal jury held that Tesla bore significant responsibility because its technology failed and that not all the blame can be put on a reckless driver, even one who admitted he was distracted by his cell phone before hitting a young couple out gazing at the stars. The decision comes as Musk seeks to convince Americans his cars are safe enough to drive on their own as he plans to roll out a driverless taxi service in several cities in the coming months.

    ...
The case also included startling charges by lawyers for the family of the deceased, 22-year-old, Naibel Benavides Leon, and for her injured boyfriend, Dillon Angulo. They claimed Tesla either hid or lost key evidence, including data and video recorded seconds before the accident.

Tesla has previously faced criticism that it is slow to cough up crucial data by relatives of other victims in Tesla crashes, accusations that the car company has denied. In this case, the plaintiffs showed Tesla had the evidence all along, despite its repeated denials, by hiring a forensic data expert who dug it up. Tesla said it made a mistake after being shown the evidence and honestly hadn’t thought it was there.

Exclusive-Tesla's brand loyalty collapsed after Musk backed Trump, data shows

LOS ANGELES, August 4 (Reuters) -Tesla for years had more repeat U.S. customers than any other major automotive brand but its loyalty has plunged since CEO Elon Musk endorsed President Donald Trump last summer, according to data from research firm S&P Global Mobility shared exclusively with Reuters.

The data, which has not been previously reported, shows Tesla’s customer loyalty peaked in June 2024, when 73% of Tesla-owning households in the market for a new car bought another Tesla, according to an S&P analysis of vehicle-registration data in all 50 states.

That industry-leading brand loyalty rate started to nosedive in July, that data showed, when Musk endorsed Trump following an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on the Republican nominee.

Tesla awards Musk $29 billion in shares with prior pay package in limbo

Tesla CEO Elon Musk was awarded an interim pay package of 96 million shares of the company over the weekend. The shares would be worth about $29 billion.

Tesla stock climbed about 2% Monday.

The company said in a filing Sunday that the pay package would vest in two years as long as Musk continued as CEO or in another key executive position.

The new award would be forfeited if the legal battle over his 2018 compensation ends with Musk being able to exercise the larger pay package, which was valued at $56 billion.

In January, Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick upheld a prior ruling in the case, Tornetta v. Musk, that the compensation plan was improperly granted. Tesla shareholders approved the pay package in June 2024.

The case is now before the Delaware Supreme Court.

Tesla is heading into multi-billion-dollar iceberg of its own making

Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving Supervised’ expansion is back firing as it exposes its shortcomings. Customers left without promised features are growing discontent and demanding to be compensated.

It’s turning into a multi-billion-dollar iceberg of Tesla’s own making.

In 2016, Tesla proudly announced that all its vehicles produced onward are equipped with “all the hardware for full self-driving,” which would be delivered through future software updates.

The automaker turned out to be significantly wrong about that.

At the time, it was producing its electric vehicles with a hardware suite known as HW2, which it had to upgrade to HW3 because it couldn’t support self-driving (FSD) capability.

HW3 was produced in vehicles from 2019 to 2023 and Tesla switched to HW4 in 2024.

At first, CEO Elon Musk claimed that FSD software updates on newer HW4 cars would lag roughly 6 months behind updates to HW3 cars to make sure to deliver the promised self-driving capability to those who have been waiting and paid for the promised capabiltiy a long time ago.

That strategy barely lasted a few months. Tesla quickly started releasing new FSD updates to HW4 cars first and it now hasn’t released a significant update to HW3 cars in close to a year.

Tesla only admitted in January 2025 that HW3 won’t be able to support unsupervised self-driving. Musk claimed that Tesla would retrofit the computers, but there has been no word about it for 10 months.

It's never going to work without LiDAR -- and it might not work even with LiDAR.

I don't know why Elon can't admit this to himself.

Self-driving is just seems be a super premium feature for the foreseeable future.
