Tanking teams don't run up the kind of first half record the Spurs did. Tanking at mid-season would be a really incompetent tank-job.

Tanking teams also don’t play veterans heavy minutes over their youth. No reason Derrick White should be in the d’league in a tanking team and no reason not to play him over some veterans in this team. They wouldn’t have reupped Pau and Mills and it would have been time to ship off Tony’s expiring deal for assets. People have no idea what a real tank job is.

Anyone that thinks Kawhi, while collecting almost $20 million this season, is faking his injury might want to consider the ramifications of ripping off a team for that kind of money. As discussed in another thread, Although his absence has been tough, I’m more concerned about the future. He should come back this season, but nobody knows for sure. It’s cost the Spurs a lot more than his salary him being out. The revenue lost will be especially bad if we don't have a good run in the playoffs.

In this Lost Season, two things (at least) are certain. One is that the Spurs had no plans in the off-season, pre-season or early season to tank; and they are not tanking now. The second certainty is that Kawhi has a real, serious (albeit mysterious) injury.

The only real mystery to me is what Kawhi's thoughts and feelings are about the Spurs team/organization.

    I agree completely.

I am really concerned for Kawhi. If he's not back early March, there's almost no point in trying to reintegrate him after. What really concerns me about Kawhi is... do you remember Tiago's calf issue. He had a bad calf going into the 2014/15 season, he saw specialists. At one point they thought it was related to a back problem. Bottom line, they never solved it and he has since (this offseason) come out saying he had always battled through pain and since that 2015 season he basically played with varying levels of pain whenever he was on the court. He was never 100%. Playing made his pain flare up to the point where he said it affected his daily activities, sitting and doing normal things... (does that not remind you of Kawhi barely being able to climb some stairs?)... That bad calf and sore back, basically retired Tiago. I hope to be wrong, but this injury just doesn't give me a good feeling.

Yes, I remember Tiago's injury well, and for a Spurs fan it feels like a horrible harbinger for Kawhi.

In retrospect, Tiago's injury may have been the impetus for the team's subsequent moves that have resulted in the team we have today. Would PATFO been less inclined to dump a healthy Tiago? Would a healthy Tiago have caused the Spurs to focus on a different FA or FAs than LMA?

It's an obvious hypothetical but not unfounded.
I remember one of the things that Pop said in 2015 when they asked him what impressed him about Lamarcus Aldridge and made the team want to pursue him aggressively as a FA... Pop said, he was always impressed that Lamarcus carried a very heavy burden for Portland. He played heavy minutes each season and they asked him to do a lot for the team. It always stuck with me that durability, playing heavy minutes and ability to carry a large burden were the reasons Pop cited first. Do you remember that interview?

The concern might have been that Timmy needed rest games through the season, Tiago was completely undependable and Kawhi would not have a quality big man to share a heavy mintues and workload burden...

Sorry, I don't remember that interview. Your memory for such things is far better than mine. : toast

I do remember Tiago's pretty much taking LMA out of the prior playoff series. A healthy Tiago was an excellent, agile big defender - even if he was pretty awkward on offense. Haha.

tholdren won't mention a serious trade proposal because when it turns out to be a dud it'll be brought up all the time (apo). In case people haven't noticed, several high level players have been traded the last year + that would be a good barometer of the trade market (which isn't very good).
