the guy quoted a source critical of Trump

for which, obviously, he should lose his job

VOA first broadcasted in 1942 to counter Nazi propaganda during World War II and its charter ensuring its editorial independence from any government official was signed into law by President Gerald Ford in 1976. In 1994, Congress went further and passed a law to create an explicit “firewall” between the VOA and the partisan politics of Washington, D.C..

“An essential guarantee of the journalistic credibility of Voice of America content is the ‘firewall’ enshrined in the 1994 U.S. International Broadcasting Act. The firewall prohibits interference by any U.S. government official in the objective, independent reporting of news, thereby safeguarding the ability of our journalists to develop content that reflects the highest professional standards of journalism, free of political interference,” notes the VOA’s website, adding:

USAGM reforms contained in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2017 maintained the longstanding statutory firewall language protecting the professional independence of VOA and all other USAGM journalists. The firewall ensures that VOA can make the final decisions on what stories to cover, and how they are covered.

ok, I think I know what he was talking about

Tuesday, while visiting sailors and Marines aboard amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD-1), Trump faulted EMALS for causing delays and cost overruns on the first-in-class USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78).

“We’re spending all that money on electric, and nobody knows what it’s going to be like in bad conditions,” Trump said in his speech. “I’m going to just put out an order, we’re going to use steam.”

Trump didn't know what he was talking about then, either

However, installing steam catapults on a Ford-class hull is not so simple. Ford-class hulls were designed to accommodate an entire power system that doesn’t rely on steam pipped throughout the ship. Instead, the power generated from the nuclear reactors drive turbines that power a shipwide electrical grid. Space on the ships is allocated differently because there’s no need for all the steam piping found on Nimitz-class ships.

“The Navy would have to spend several billion dollars to redesign the ship,” Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, told USNI News on Tuesday.

stiffing contractors like Trump's scammy companies do

One plaintiff, DAI Global, LLC, alleged that USAID has “failed to make payment on over $120 million in invoices for work” it had “already completed, some of which are now past due.” Another plaintiff, Chemonics, said it had “roughly $103.6 million in outstanding invoices issued to USAID for work performed in 2024, most of which were submitted prior to the stop-work orders.”

Most likely this means the US will contract out its attack on cartels in Mexico, but it's possible Rs want to legalize Trumpy paramilitaries for the home front. After all, aren't folks who resist Trump's immigration policy in an organized way arguably "cartel-linked"?

Trump's attack on women's sports has begun

(Sports and fair treatment for women is DEI or something)

The U.S. Department of Education has officially rescinded a nine-page fact sheet on le IX guidance that was released last month under the outgoing presidential administration, a move that was anticipated by many within college sports.

The memo, which was issued on Jan. 16, stated that name, image and likeness (NIL) payments to college athletes must be proportionate between a school’s male and female athletes to comply with le IX, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools that receive federal money. That instruction could have had a significant impact on future revenue sharing between colleges and athletes under the pending House settlement, which has a final approval hearing on April 7.

cutting utility assistance for poor people in Alabama during the winter

    Trump is like a turbo-Scrooge

But hundreds of Alabama residents are receiving a $100 surcharge on their energy bills as a direct result of Trump's actions in the White House. About 250 customers of Huntsville Utilities, the public utility company in Huntsville, Alabama, received a letter informing them that their account "has been debited $100." The surcharge occurred because one of Trump's executive orders froze a grant that assists low-income residents with their energy bills.

In an email, Mike Presley of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs confirmed that the letter from Huntsville Utilities was genuine and the $100 increase was the direct result of Trump's executive order.

Alabama received a "$1 million allocation for the LIHEAP program from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) for fiscal year 2025," Presley wrote. "Under the IIJA, eligible households that receive heating assistance from the regular [Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program] LIHEAP program funds also receive a supplemental award of $100 from these IIJA funds to help with home heating costs until the IIJA funds are depleted." But, according to Presley, "[t]his supplemental funding is currently paused due to President Trump’s executive order led Unleashing American Energy."

Possibly the least surprising move ever. Not only was this last-second guidance completely at odds with the incoming administration's overall guiding principles, it was also at odds with the DOE's own historical interpretation of le IX.

Schools have NEVER distributed revenue evenly between men's and women's sports (your school's football coach probably earns as much as every woman's sport coach combined, your school's shiny new football-only training facility costs 8 figures, etc), but the accepted interpretation that as long as the opportunity to play (i.e., scholarships) was equivalent, that's all that mattered. Everybody followed this, universities banked on this, and the DOE never even hinted that this would be changing. Then four days before Inauguration Day, the DOE suddenly drops brand new guidance from the sky completely upending that.

This was never going to hold up; the only question was when the official announcement undoing that surprise guidance would end up coming.
