I've contemplated teaching but I don't think I could do anything prior to college. I just hate high school kids. I really ing do. And I'd snap.
Tell them to come work for Northside!
Seriously though, that's a shame.

I've always heard that middle school was the worst.
it think once she adjusts to the schedule, working 9 months a year for that amount of money isn't all that bad.
You could always teach Poker in the adult education classes Northside offers twice a year![]()
One of my best friends teaches middle school math, and I have heard some crazy, crazy stories from him. He's an amazing teacher, though - he does it because that's what he really feels called to do and that it makes a difference, and 70% of his kids in his TAKS math class (who had failed the year before) passed this year. As horrible as the kids can be, though, I've heard worse stories about the administrative bull he's had to go through. No one wants to make it easier for you.
Your friend's story sounds like my girlfriend's.
Fascinating.
To succeed at the HS level, you just need to have a Dylan/Dylan contest.
Not worth the pay for that .
Let the bums be dropout losers. em'
Teaching is something I will have to encounter if I proceed as a High School Counseler.
I believe 3 years are required, plus the obvious master's degree.
However, the salary is considerbly higher, approximately $70,000/year.
You've gotta be kidding. Counselors make more than teachers?
Counselors at Roosevelt were worthless.
No they don't.
In most districts, librarians and counselors (who must have a master's) get paid on the same salary scale as a teacher with a master's degree- except for cir stances where they work a longer school year so they make more. And a master's is only worth about $1000 more per year.

This is true. In 4 years there, I think I saw my counselor once. And that was just a "Hi, I'm your counselor!" meeting.

School librarians usually get paid more than just a teacher with a masters - especially if they have media training. School media specialists here in MI can make upwards of $55k/y, and that's not really unusual for urban districts.

i lasted one semester at kennedy in the fall of 97...yeah... teaching ingrates with ty parents...
5 ingrates per class and the other 25 suffer...with zero supports from the admins, i couldn't take that ...
God Bless those that can...
bring back the hitstick!!!
dont forget the sexual harassment that comes along with the job,

However, it wouldn't surprise me to see, in some cir stance, a guidance counselor to on a pay rate similar to a teacher.
I can't speak for elementary or middle school, but I would assume high school counselors having a heftier workload.
And I can't confirm the 3 month vacation. I believe they may have a 2-4 week vacation during summer.

Northside's pay scale
I teach in a not so great part of town and I don't have the issues your wife has. But it's all on the support you have on campus.
I'll throw this out though, I'll take dealing with inner-city students in a high school over some of the parents in high schools in northside or Alamo Heights anyday.
And yes, as cheesy as it sounds, if you love seeing your students suceed, then the 43k is worth. Plus, you cant beat summer school pay.
It is nice not having to pay into social security. I'll give them that.
Believe me I know what I am talking about.
In the NISD a librarian gets paid on the same scale as a teacher with a Master's Degree. http://www.nisd.net/hr/compensation/...809TchrPay.htm
NEISD works the same way- example job posting.
http://www.neisd.net/employment/teacher/Librarian6.html
Boerne ISD- same way if you check the charts:

You may see pay differences for jobs that require work weeks in the summer but they are still basically at the same rate per day.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
SALARY: Teacher Salary + Stipend
WORK DAYS: 202
The salary is still based upon the salary for a teacher with the extra work days plus a very small stipend.
seriously though...when the administration can smack those asses with a big stick again...education can get back on track...
till then...the pay just won't be enough...
The State of Texas even lumps them all together:
