    But he never progressed
He's not out of his thirties yet -- and as noted, he's got a couple of other jobs.

The point is, this is a joke. Sanjay Gupta is a celebrity. I'm asking for someone to please show me how he is a great doctor. Has he distinguished himself?
I'm asking you to show me how he is a bad doctor.

Seriously, do you think the Surgeon General treats patients?

Like I said, pretty pedestrian qualifications, especially for a man who is 39 years old. This is a celebrity pick.

Do you really think he's the most qualified candidate? Isn't that what matters? And why not Dr. Drew? I posted his qualifications, you know.

Associate Chief before 40 is pretty substantial.

Gupta looks quite qualified to fulfill those duties, even uniquely so for some of them.

    Good pick

If he can tell people not to smoke, get off your fat ass and exercise, and wear a rubber then he is qualified. Who gives a about the surgeon general.

Exactly -- and folks these days are more likely to listen to a well-known public figure. Gupta is completely qualified.

If that's the case, then why do we even have a Surgeon General? I mean, Sanjay Gupta is already a well-known public figure, and he makes a ton of money because people watch him and listen to him. Doesn't he already tell us not to smoke, get off our asses, and wear rubbers? Why would he accept a paycut to do precisely the same thing? Why not save some federal money and abolish the Office of the Surgeon General? After all, we already have Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Drew, Dr. Oz, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Dre, Dr. J, Dr. Phil, and Andrew Weil. Just a question.

Maybe the Surgeon General has responsibilities greater than that of a talking head on CNN. Maybe the Surgeon General needs to be a leader and an effective administrator. Maybe the Surgeon General actually needs to know something about public health besides the glaringly obvious.

Not everyone can be a celebrity like Sanjay Gupta or Dr. Drew, so perhaps we should first consider hard-working doctors who have actually distinguished themselves in their fields.

Go back and look at the duties.

Well he did point out to Moore the wait times for cardiac catherization in socialized systems and told Moore he might need one someday. So I'd count that as a polite way of saying get off your fat ass and exercise. He's qualified.

It doesn't take a surgeon to tell a fat guy to exercise and eat well

It wasn't funny the first time so you try it again? Fail.

Anyway - I don't now about Sanjay, I don't know about Surgeon General, but I do know that Doobs cracks me up because for someone who is basically a highly paid debater he gets destroyed on this forum quite often.

Sanjay is obviously lazy if thats ALL he's done so far. Just like Obama. Right, Doobs?

The Surgeon General in addition being the nation's chief public health educator does lead a large public health bureaucracy. While Dr. Gupta, as doobs pointed out, may be lacking in ins utional or academic experience, his cv is thoroughly respectable and he is obviously well qualified to fill a public affairs capacity.

    Isn't he?

Again, being Associate Chief of Neurosurgery before the age of 40 is a fairly distinguished honor. Most people are still in their Neurosurgery Residency in their early-mid 30's.

The Surgeon General is probably the most worthless, least influential appointment in government.

Its one step up in responsibility than being an Ambassador.

And we all know what the Blagololoovichh wanted in return for Obama's seat because it was such a cake job...

This is the most important job in govt and therefore can't be left to just any dope.
