Power Supply trouble-shooting guide
you do not have to be a computer geek to fix a power supply
take cover off
take power supply out
put new one in
it could be the main board, power supply or video
unlikely the memory
I have a power supply checker but you are to far away
20 dollars for a power supply is cheap especially at a retail location
Do yourself a favor if it's the power supply and buy a quality one. Yeah, you can buy one for $20, but at some point down the road I can guarantee you it will blow and take your motherboard, processor, hard drive, or some combination thereof with it.
Head to Altex (one store on 281, another on IH35 at Weidner) and get one there, or head to newegg.com and order one.
Antec makes great power supplies.
We're going to just pay the computer guy we know to buy and replace the power supply for us.
timvp must have downloaded something that was too hot for the computer to handle.
No, we keep all the porn on the laptop.![]()
He's right. It could be either one. Nikki's Dell had the same problem about a month ago: the power went out and her computer died even though it was plugged into a surge protector. I initially suspected the power supply because I've had them die in similar situations before, but it turned out to be the main board.
So even though it could very well be the power supply, it's also very possible that it's the main board. If swapping the power supply doesn't help, look at the board next.
You haven't been watering your computer have you? They tend to dry out in the low humidity we've been having.![]()
Just for anybody else on this side of town, I highly recommend ACS off of Bandera & Eckert.
That's the one...
Their powersupply may be $20 but they have enough faith in them to give you a 1 year warranty. BB and CompUSA seriously overcharge for powersupplies...they are not high technology...there is no need to charge as much as they do.
One year? That's scary. Antec covers theirs for three.
and probably charge 3x's the amount.
Yeah, so what?
I'd rather pay for something that
1) the company stands behind for a longer length of time
2) has a known reliability to it. When PS units fail, they usually take other system components with them, personally I'd rather invest in something that I know I won't be potentially looking at a new motherboard and processor along with power supply yearly.
also if a power supply goes it could burn out the hard drive (your important data you do not back up like A FOOL)and modem
power supply's are important!
It's already fixed; it was the power supply. The same guy who fixed my laptop replaced it for us.
Yeah it could do that too ducks. A blown PSU could take out anything plugged into it.
I backup my important stuff once a week so I'm not too worried about a drive getting hammered. Plus HDs are cheap.
Now, go burn out a mobo and CPU and you're looking at a $300+ bill. No thanks. All I use in building systems is Antec power supplies, never had one fail yet.
Props to that guy Mark that fixed this computer. Changed out the power supply in ten minutes. Everything is working fine now.
If you ever have a computer problem and you are like me and hate taking apart computers, call 287-0465. The guy knows what he's doing.
LJ, you realize that if you have any capability with a screwdriver you coulda fixed that power supply, right?
Take off the case to your computer, pull all the power cords off the components, undo the 4 screws holding the power supply to the case, pull the power supply, put in the new one, and reverse the order.
If y'all have any computer problems in the future just drop me an email, I'll walk ya through it.
Sure it's not much trouble, but you have to go to the store and buy the parts first.LJ, you realize that if you have any capability with a screwdriver you coulda fixed that power supply, right?

This way is easier, we are out of our house running errands anyway -- we drop off the computer at the guy's house to fix and come back 30 minutes later and pick it up.

My theory is if I pay someone else to fix it, I don't have to worry about messing up and I get to help the economy.
I do what I can for the common man.

That's cool. Y'all are good people, just wanted to make sure you weren't dropping large coin when all you need is a new part and a screwdriver to get it done.

AHF, the guy barely charges for labor.
When my laptop was broken, most people in here were telling me that I had to replace the motherboard or replace the computer completely. At the very least, Sony was telling me that it would be nearly $400 to fix and I would have had to ship the laptop to them and wait for 10 days to get it back. This guy fixed my laptop for $179 including the part and labor and I picked it up in 2 hours.
Today, the guy barely charged above the cost of the part and he was done in 10 minutes. Plus he has a great warranty.
The guy also sells new and refurbished laptops if anyone is interested.
BTW, we don't mow our own lawn either. It's just how we are.![]()
We don't? My work goes unnoticed.
