This morning when I woke up, all of our computers were off (power surge/outage?).

    We have surge protectors, etc.

When I try to turn one of them back on (it's a HP a420n) it doesn't come back on at all.

    What should I do?

Try resetting the surge protector (if it has a reset button).

Unplug both devices from the wall outlet and the surge respectively.

Try the computer directly into the wall to make sure it's not the power supply.

Correct, but there's a green light blinking on the back, right below where you plug in the power supply.

the green blinking light is probably the network card.

That's what I thought it was too but it's not. It's a light that blinks when the computer is plugged in. If you unplug it, it blinks slower and slower until it stops.

I tried a new power cord.

Fans do not come on and there are not any beeps.

Check for electricity at the outlet. Plug in something else there directly to the wall and also into the surge protector. You may have just blown a fuse.

Check to see if the computer is under warranty.

I just got off the phone with the guy who fixed my laptop. He said that (the power supply) is likely the problem. We are going to take the computer to him later today and he said he can replace/fix it.

    Thanks.

If the outlet works and you have tried a working power cord the next thing seems to be the powersupply...especially if the pc does not do anything at all. There may be at least 2 fans in the pc. One in the powersupply and one over the cpu. If you open the case and turn on the pc and the fans do not at least move a bit then I would check that next. By checking I mean get a new one. You can find a 350/400 watt for about $20 at this place off of bandera outside the loop(where the coastal mart in the marshall area is located).

before messing with the memory/cards keep in mind that it went out on it's own and not from messing with the insides...unless you have a technically savvy poltergeist(technogeist?) I don't think the memory sticks or cards would unseat themselves. Keep it simple and logical when it comes to messing with the pc. step by step from the outside in..

Power supply is dead. Just go to Best Buy or CompUSA. If you can find the exact same one as the one that's in your system, replace it and take the old one back for a refund. Oh and you didn't hear that from me!

If a green light is on, it makes me wonder if its the main board and not the PS. A dead PS usually means no lights on the system. You did the right thing calling for service.

Well, does the PS fan spin at all? On rare occasions the computer may act like this when the backup battery on the mobo is dead. All Systems Go is a good place to get stuff fixed and there are fairly cheap too. They are on the corner of Wurzbach and Bab behind the Texaco in that shopping center.
