See I would choose the reverse...in Krav Maga...they actually teach you...if you go down..the fights over...realistically...that "guy" your fighting might have some friends...and while you're doing an arm bar on that dude...his friends would be kicking the out of you..

It's obviously preferable to remain standing while pummeling your opponent, but he's not likely to just stand there and take it. If you are well trained in grappling, you've got a better chance of avoiding his takedown but in reality, it's pretty likely you'll end up on the ground.

Realistic self-defense means being prepared for the worst, just because you're on your back doesn't have to mean the fight is over if you are trained.

The uncomfortable truth is that if you are fighting more than one opponent, you're going to get your ass kicked. Get a weapon or get away.

Brazilian Ju-Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the best choices if you can find it, my second choice would be Krav Maga. Stay away from the more “esoteric/internal” arts like Akido , tai-chi and kung-fu. Their primary purpose was never to be an effective fighting system.
Isn't the Brazilian one the art that became Break dancing?

As for Akido, many people swear by it as being the best. I was trying to think of it earlier, but couldn't remember the name. Still don't recall the name of the one I mentioned either.

That take down & throat hold that Matt Burch…(Operation Repo) uses is the most effective move I have ever seen…

You’re thinking of Capoeira. It was developed by Brazilian slaves to disguise their training as a dance.

BJJ was Japanese ju-jitsu/judo refined through no-holds barred compe ion in Brazil and made famous by the Gracie family through their promotion of the UFC.

Akido was developed by a man named Ueshiba for the purpose of developing a person spiritually. If you train in the art, you will find the attacker (uke) is required to “attack” in a very unrealistic manner so that he can be thrown w/ very little effort. In a real fight, it doesn’t work.

Is that the fighting style Viggo Mortensen used in Eastern Promises when kicked the out of those gangsters with his penis flying all over the place?

EDIT: I just made that seem really gay, but it's not. He wasn't using his penis to fight, it was just flying all over the place because he was fighting them at some bath house.

It STILL sounds gay. Viggo's penis obviously made a deep impression on you.

There's some Russian mixture of martial arts, can't remember the name, but that's supposed to be one of the best for self-defense in a real-world situation.
its called AK47 and works best in crowded situations

If you had to pick one fighting style to learn...that would be most applicable to defend yourself in a real life situation...which would it be...
Rabid attack lawyers. I keep one on a leash at all times. I don't feed them and occasionally poke them with pointy sticks to keep them worked-up.

You don't want to know what happened to the last punk-ass that messed with me...
