it was that melamine screw up a year or two ago. Dog food that used ingredients from china (wheat, etc) had melamine in it (to boost up the protein score of the food), and was killing a bunch of pets over here in the US.
Supposedly toothpaste that was "Made in China" also had melamine in it.

China: "Let's put poison in our pet food and toothpaste and export it all over the world".
