Ohio was loaded with them. We used to catch them and put in jars with holes poked in the lids. I'm sure they were dead by the next day!
I've never seen them at my house, but did see a few at friend's house about a mile away a few years ago

evolution? possibly a chemical came into the area wiped em out
I spent some time in the country in Missouri last summer and there were tons of them there.
I still see them my summers in virginia.
I can't recall seeing many here for a long time though.
It's not just the bee's.
Seriously though, I still have some show up in my backyard but definately not nearly as much as say 10 years ago.
