The Heat have no business being ahead of the Spurs. I don't mind LA and BOS.
The Heat have something that is sustainable and correlates highly with championship basketball: A top defense.

Those rankings were awful. 10 % for the Spurs ? He said it was a good percentage and higher than he even expected for the Spurs. Before the season started, I might have agreed with him but the Spurs have already shown a strong resolve and a 'refuse to lose' at ude.

The only team that should be ranked above the Spurs is the Celtics. That's it and that's because they beat us without Garnett. We'll see how they do when they come to San Antonio.

The Lakers aren't playing good basketball but the defending Champs deserve to be in Top 5 consideration:

    1.Celtics (35%)
    2.Spurs (30%)
    3.Lakers (20%)
    4.Heat (10%)
    5. Magic (5%)

    There you go.

I think it is fair actually. We got swept outta round 2 by the Suns last year. Duncan is older and not what he was and the Spurs have not won a le in a few years. So despite the record people think we have a lot to prove and we do have a lot to prove. That said i think this is the deepest most focused Spurs team we have had since maybe 2005.
By your logic, only the Lakers and Celtics would be favored then since they were there last year.

The Magic have never won a le so why are they being considered? The Heat won a few years ago but with a different team.

It's funny because as much as you guys on Hollinger and his crazy kooky formulas, he has the Spurs leading at 29%.

My ranking includes how teams are playing right now. Even though we have the best record, the Celtics beat us without Garnett and have won games despite having injuries.

The Lakers have been playing bad basketball. Even when we beat them, it seemed that it wasn't the Lakers of the last 2 years. They've lost their hunger and have reverted to playing selfish basketball.

I'm sure the Spurs will still have to go through the Lakers to win and I wouldn't have it any other way. But right now, we are playing better TEAM ball and I would give us a better chance at winning the le than them.

This. LA and Boston can and should be rightfully ahead of the Spurs seeing as they were last years Finals representatives, but the Heat? I don't think so. And the Spurs chances should be alot more than 10% as well...

Heat 2nd most likely to win a championship this year?

If you asked me who I think has the best chance to win as many championships as possible in the next, say, 7 years, I would pick the Heat.

If you ask me which team has the best chance of winning a championship this year, the Heat are not even close to being on the top of my list.

    For this year I'd say

    1. Boston
    2. Lakers
    3/4. Heat/Spurs

I don't find Broussard's lack of confidence in San Antonio to be over the top or an insult. SA clearly has front court deficiencies as we are right now with an underdeveloped Splitter.

I find his over-confidence in the Heat to be a joke though. They far and away have the worst bench in the league, and that's during the regular season without much pressure to perform.

In the same vein I'm not counting on Bonner showing up in the playoffs when assessing the Spurs chances despite the fact that he's been shooting the 3 extremely well all season. Though, I am counting on the threat of his 3 being enough to space the floor well for Parker/Gino during the minutes that he does get.

How often do radically new mega-star teams win championships their first year?

ESPN commentators are contractually obligated to overhype the Heat.
The NBA TV crew not so much. McHale and Steve Smith were all over them last night for their last plays in both 4th qtr and OT. A couple of jack up threes. The Heat are too big of boneheads to win 4 playoff series in a row.

The Heat have far more fundamental issues than jacking up ill-advised 3s to try and win the game. Yesterday's game was not an indication of the Heat at their best. I'm hardly considering that terrible 4th quarter/overtime performance when assessing their overall chances.

To me the Heat are rank 3 at best to win the championship right now (possibly better than the Spurs; I don't think it's ludicrous to rank Heat at 3 and Spurs at 4 right now). That said, anybody putting them in the top 2 in lieu of the Celtics/Lakers haven't been watching Celtics basketball (particularly) all season long.

Of course that wasn't an indication of the Heat at their best. But it seems there is a big drop off between the Heat at their best and the Heat at their next to best. I haven't seem a lot of their games but to me it looks like they have the potential to suck worse than any of the other contenders.

Hollinger's formulas always seem to favor regular-reason dominating teams. I swear every time I've looked at those percentages I've seen Dallas up where they shouldn't be (considering their playoff history).

Quite frankly I would pretty much agree...I'd say they have a 10-20% chance. And this is still relatively big, these probabilities have the best case scenario for these powerhouses. You never know who's going to be healthy, and who's going to be at the top of their game when the time comes. Timing is huge.

I'd consider tied for 3 pretty close to being at the top of the list, but that's just me. To be honest, it's all going to come down to who's healthiest and playing the best at the time. It's not like the Celtics are WAY above the Lakers or the Spurs, I'd say minimally. The differences in the strength of these teams are not really large enough to even make it worth making a list in my opinion. I can see the Spurs playing great this year and going back to the finals, but I can also picture them losing to the Lakers, and neither outcome is heavily favored to me.
