Anyone with an ounce of sense (that leaves out the OP) can tell right away that large market teams have higher ratings. Spurs vs NY, higher ratings. Two small market teams = low ratings. Ring looks just as good though.

A celtics/spurs finals will get quality ratings. Most of it has to do with the weak opposition. see spurs/pistons got respectable ratings.

We're a small market team from south texas. We get it. But we're also the most winningest team in Sports for the past 12 years. Go find those ratings and post 'em.

Completely Stern's fault for not marketing Ginobili when he was phenomenally athletic

Now, about 4+ years too late, ESPN will occasionally throw out the "Wow Ginobili alone is worth the price of admission" line but it's too little too late.

Spurs are already blacklisted as a boring team by the media. Ginobili's acrobatic plays aren't hyped up enough to generate interest, and it doesn't even matter because Ginobili only has a fraction of the athleticism he used to have back in the day so circus solo shots by him are at a minimum in this day and age.

The "Black Mark on the NBA" has more to do with self-hating MJ not appearing in any more Finals. Since then, the NBA's looked for the next MJ but Kobe and Lebron have shown they can't sell Finals up to MJ's level.

They probably only survey people living in NY & LA for their "ratings" so who gives a flying about that.

And if Lebron is so popular and "marketed" by the league then he should get the lion's share of the blame for the poor ratings in the 2007 finals.

OP is just a butthurt lakers fan having a tantrum, nothing else.

I tried softening the blow I delivered in my OP...but since you guys insist...I'm gonna abuse you some more...

Spurs Finals (last game ratings) these are the last game of the series ratings only. I previously posted my executive summary of these ratings in my OP...

    1999 Game 5 – 11.0 rating
    2003 Game 6 – 7.5 rating
    2005 Game 7 – 11.9 rating
    2007 Game 4 - 6.5 rating

So overall the ratings for the Spurs were up in 1999 and again in 2005…If you look closely at the Final game of the series rating that I list above it clearly shows Spurs getting a bump because in 99 they played NY so it obviously helped their ratings and again in 2005 they played the defending Champion Pistons at the time so that clearly helped them as well. The Spurs simply can't draw based on their own Merit.

Now let’s consider the modern day Lakers last game of the series in the finals:

    2000 Game 6 – 14.7 rating
    2001 Game 5 – 11.2 rating
    2002 Game 4 – 10.8 rating
    2004 Game 5 – 13.8 rating
    2008 Game 6 – 10.7 rating
    2009 Game 5 – 8.0 rating
2010 Game 7 – 18.2 rating (only in the Spurs wet dream could they achieve this)

The conclusion is that LA is consistently a much better draw than the Spurs…it doesn’t matter who we play…even though Orlando did drag us a bit. But the Spurs hold the most ominous record. Why would Stern market Manu when he has Kobe…Manu can’t sell except gay pride t-shirts…and why would Stern market Timmy when he has Shaq…what and who is Duncan going to appeal to…the sloth footed crowd?

Face it dude the Spurs are a drag on the NBA brand and what absolutely makes this all the more worse for Spur fan is that around the country people really HATE Kobe and people generally Like Duncan and yet Kobe is still a bigger draw.

very very bad point of view. terrible.

we know boston has a big tv market, had spurs faced boston rather than measly Nets or Cavs, the ratins would have been around 10.

just look at the rating Spurs vs. NY. kicked the out of any Shaq-less Lakers rating.

    terrible thread

Who really gives a what other people think about watching the Spurs. I enjoy seeing them play and seeing them win. Does a low TV rating make a Championship any less of a championship? Still get the LOB trophy and some nice, shiney rings when it's all over with.

the spurs "play" TBH was never boring. Offensively they were a bit conservative IMHO BEFORE this year ...but as someone that appreciates defense, the Spurs (especially 99) played some of the best. Their in bounds-plays were stuff i used with some of my own teams i have coached.

But the spurs never cultivate any true personalities ...and that is what TNT, ESPN and ABC (NBC/CBS) coveted most. They have NEVER been able to replace MJ or the greatness of the 80's ...so they manfacture stars. And no not Kobe, he is a proven winner ...but many of the so called stars do not pay the price to master their craft that Kobe, Duncan, Manu and the WINNERS in the NBA do.

But the reason style is preffered over substance:

    1. the Jordan effect (media/Stern need to replace MJ) even though MJ had GREAT fundamentals ...people focused on the highlights. not his foot work and form.

    2. the And I era (poor teamwork and execution) at the expense of showboat play

    3. ESPN/Sportscenter for focusing on dunks and crap like "the Decision", melo-drama and the Kobe/Shaq feud instead of focusing on the solid play of the spurs

Most casual sports fan want the sizzle without the steak. Lakers give you both ...spurs only the steak that is why the media doesnt give them the love they deserve.
Now hill and Parker recently have made some off-court buzz but the organization sweeps it under the rug and since you dont have much of a national following it caused barely a riplple.

In L.A.? If Odom was banging Brian shaw's wife it would be the media apocalypse ...sorry for the rant ...but though no spur fan, i do appreciate good basketball.
