Hmmmmmm, if that's where they were goin, it could be to be as a deterrent in case Ghidaffi makes a suicide dash with some jets to attack Europe. I guess.
    Very interesting thought.. definitely possible.

Maybe they're simply joining U.K. fighters on their attack missions? Part of the whole 'U.S. not taking the lead' mantra that Obama seems keen on displaying?

Lakenheath only has C models, which is purely air to air. If the US was going to join in on the attack missions, they'd use the 16's and A-10s at Spangdahlem and Aviano, with the A-10 being a beast at putting ground targets in a hurt locker.

F-15s are just loud-ass planes whenever I have been around them. Much moreso than F-16s, F-18s, or F-22s in my experience. I can't see any reason they'd use their afterburners over San Antonio; why waste fuel like that?

How have you guys lived in San Antonio and never seen fighters? I so many 16s out of Lackland its not even funny. I've never seen a 15 there but I have seen them at Randolph.

The only regulation for flying is that they're not supposed to break the sound barrier over population centers unless its an emergency but I'm not even sure thats true. Also, no offense, but I would not trust anyone who's not trained to give a reliable al ude those planes were flying at.

I dunno, but for me seeing military planes over San Antonio is pretty much normal. BTW having spent years driving down 90 past Lackland I lost count the number of times I had anything from as small as a 16 to as big as a C5 land right on top of me. Pretty cool sight each time.

Here in New Mexico I see them all the time in Albuquerque too. Saw my first Osprey here - that was pretty bad ass.

Never seen fighters on the Northside, no. Maybe at cruising al ude (such that it didn't register as noteworthy) , but not low enough to shake the house.

They can break the sound barrier if it's an emergency. If memory serves, a couple of 15's broke the sound barrier over Oregon when some civvie in a Cessna broke the airspace over Seattle where Obama was at.

Yeah, you pretty see everything flying over SA. For fighters, I know I have seen F-4, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-111, F-117, and F-22, discounting the time around airshows. The only ones I haven't seen are old Korea and early Vietnam fighters like the F-86, F-101, F-104, F-8, and F-105.

I've seen fighters many times over SA. This was different. They were incredibly low and 3 came in in rapid succession. As far as the al ude thing, you're right. I don't know how off I am in my prediction but I can say I live pretty close to the airport where commercial liners are in nearing the end of their descent and these planes were half as low as a commercial plane is.

U-2 or E-3 Sentry (AWACS) taking off is about 50 times louder than any of those...scared the living out of me on my first deployment hearing em take off.

I see fighters pass overhead everyday in SA while I'm at work. Nothing unusual about seeing 2 or 3 of them together.

Yea, seeing the fighters/trainers in the sky has always been the usual sign that I am approaching the Randolph I-35 area; but even away from there I've seen them low and occ. they use the after-burners. Seeing those monstrous transport planes has always been a landmark for approaching Lackland too, but I haven't been in the Lackland area in ages. Either one of those scenarios would only be odd if they didn't happen....

I think by the time he gets that desperate to maintain power, his air force will be well contained. Still a scary thought.

We're seeing them here in Austin, too, and I hardly ever see any flight traffic here on the north side. Another one just flew over as I wrote this.
