Too many morons, like Kool and Lkrfan, who have been weened on 80s NBA highlights showcasing its "physical" play like McHale taking Rambis's head off, Parish knocking out Laimbeer, or the Bad Boys repeatedly sending Jordan to the floor, mistakenly believe that the 80s was some transcendent era of toughness. When you actually watch the games, however, you discover just how in' apathetic teams were on defense.
The league wide FG% in 1985 was .491, as compared to .459 today. Granted, teams took way less 3 point shots back then, but that also reinforces my point. Today, 3 point shooting is an absolutely crucial component to any offense, needed to spread the floor and open up the inside. Back then, teams didn't employ 3 point shooting as much because they were likely to get a high percentage shot running their regular offense. Besides traps, double teams were hardly used, there weren't many "specialized" perimeter and interior defenders, and teams looked to out score their opponent rather than shut them down. It was indeed an era where "offense wins championships."
Why do you think the NBA ins uted all these rule changes to increase scoring? Because defense got too in' good.
Anyhow, I never saw a point in comparing the 80s to today. In my mind, the time span is still the modern era, and any great player from then would excel in today's game and vice versa.
