Dan, this issue has been raised twice before. People don't care, and if it's all Kerry's got, he's toast.

This is different than the swift boats thing. Something like 58% said the SBV ads had some truth to them. 27% say the CBS thing could be legit, and that's before the wheels fell off yesterday with the Burkett connection. You can't compare the two.

Okay, Mrs. Knox, let's be clear, you say you did not type these memos and that you believe them to be fake, and you say you typed memos like them when you were Killian's secretary. Were these similar memos regarding George W. Bush or some other Guardsman? Because, last week, you stated that you didn't specifically remember Bush but that you had a general impression that some, in the Guard, received favorable treatment.

Now, Mr. Killian's son says you weren't his father's personal secretary but a pool secretary, is that correct?

Mrs. Knox, did you know if George W. Bush was suspended from the Guard or from flying status because of insubordination or because he missed a physical? And, did you type any memos to that effect, specifically addressing George W. Bush's status?

At this point it is time to realize that Rather is not only a partisan hack journalist (not exactly a major revelation) but also one who was not hoaxed. There is every indication that he was aware of at least the fact that the experts who looked at the memos had serious questions about their authenticity. He should have known about his primary source's background and why he might not be the most credible. And so on.

His stonewalling since then would only seem to confirm this.

If CBS ever admits that the memos were indeed fakes then most likely they will try to salvage the reputation of the network and Rather by making him and his producer out to be the victims of a hoax.

Sorry, this looks like a partisan hit job conducted by someone quite willing to do anything to attack the president and influence the election. Rather should pay for this.

CBS CONCERN OVER VIEWERSHIP PLUNGE; RATHER RATINGS FADE IN MAJOR MARKETS

CBS executives on both coasts have become concerned in recent days that Dan Rather's EVENING NEWS broadcast has plunged in the ratings since the anchor presented questionable do ents about Bush's National Guard service.

NIELSEN numbers released this week show Rather fading and trailing his rivals in every Top 10 city, other than San Francisco, with audience margins in some cities running more than 6 to 1 against CBS!

Executives fear many voters inclined to vote for Bush are now switching off Rather.

"The audience appears to [be] polarized," a top CBS source said from LOS ANGELES on Thursday. "Rightly or wrongly, we're being perceived as 'anti-Bush,' which I do not think is fair to Dan, who is a fine journalist... of course we do not like to see the ratings coming back the way they are this week."

In Philadelphia, the nation's #4 market, Rather pulled a 2.6 rating/5 share on Tuesday night against ABC's 13.3 rating/23 share and NBC's 4.0/7.

In Chicago, Rather hit a 2.3/5 to ABC's 9.2/20.

CBS trailed ABC by more than 2 to 1 in Los Angeles.

And in the nation's top market, New York, Rather finished not only behind NBC NIGHTLY NEWS and ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT -- but also pulled less audience than reruns of the SIMPSONS, WILL & GRACE and KING OF QUEENS.

Rather finished dead last in New York during the 6:30 pm timeslot among all broadcast channels tracked by NIELSEN on Tuesday.
