Reading the comments of this thread saddens me. It saddens me how many people come to this article to mock. It similarly saddens me that people come here to defend unconsentual infant genital cutting to either to placate their own sensitive egos either as unconsenting recipients thereof, or as parents accessory to unnecessary infant genital cutting.

I really don't feel like counting the number of people commenting who have this at ude such as "it happened to me, and I'm fine."

There once was a time during the 1960s or so in the US when there were published medical studies about the so-called "benefits" of female cir cision, now known as "female genital mutilation." In spite of such claims of "benefit," including concerns of "hygiene, frigidity, fertility, protection from STDs," etc. ad nausium, no amount of medical study could ever justify the genital cutting of females in today's society. It was unnecessary back then, and culture now has us viewing this act as the atrocity against humankind that it is.

Why then is it that we feel that male genital cutting based this same medical reasoning as above is OK? Stop for a moment and think critically about this. If we are REALLY expected to believe that male cir cision reduces the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases, why is it that even with the majority of sexually active males altered at birth we that STILL have counter-intuitively high rates of STDs in the USA?

Are we really expected to believe that cir cision is harmless when there is a ridiculous pandemic rate of erectile dysfunction in the US? The largest consumer of sildenafil (Viagra) on earth is the US, and the largest importer thereof is Israel (by a long shot, mind you). Not many other countries even come close. Heck, go to the Pfizer pharmaceutical sales data sheet and look for those numbers. These two countries consumption rates tower drastically over many others. I don't think this is coincidence.

Cir cision isn't a vaccine against anything. If you have unprotected sex with a partner that has HIV, or some other disease, I'm sorry, but a lack of foreskin really isn't going to make that much of a difference for you. It won't protect you definitively against against any contracted infection with 100% certainty like an actual vaccine might, so please don't fool yourself on this.

If it were to problematic for males to have the genitalia they were born with, wouldn't the human race have died out years ago from our thousands of years of not doing this previously? The majority of men on this planet are uncir cised, and we don't really hear about any epidemic of their penises falling off because of it.

Heck, infant genital cutting for religious reasons makes no sense to me either! If you felt so strongly about your religious beliefs, would you not be better off carrying those values more closely in your heart as opposed to paying someone to carve those beliefs into the genitals of your son with a knife?

Infants cannot receive general anesthesia because it kills them, so they may receive local anesthetics for cir cisions performed, but local anesthetics (assuming that they are even used) are inappropriate for tissue amputation and cannot block the pain entirely. As a result, the conscious infant is usually still conscious and screaming during the procedure from pain, unless he goes into a form of neurogenic shock resembling coma from the stress and pain.

^^Stop fooling yourselves about any part of this being ethical. Seriously. Stop it.^^

    It's 2012.
    We have soap.
    We have water.
It doesn't make sense to try to use knives as a primary method of keeping the genitals clean anymore, so please stop being so collectively scathing about a grown man with time to spare finally having the gumption to look at the scars on his genitals put there without HIS permission or recollection and wondering "why?"

IMO TBQH FWIW, It's the perfect excuse in bed for scars resulting from jerking it (or having been jerked) raw.

"Don't worry baby, that's from cir cision."

    Chicks dig scars.

Also, with regard to your spiel about our ancestors, would you rather have penile spines? How do YOU think your partner would feel having one in the buttocks?

I keep my landscaping clear cut for the ladies. It's for them, the rest is for you to take a piss (plus, i wouldn't want to be pissing outside-in anyway).

Penile spines? Or cir cised penis? Your call.
