those islands were china's properties back in the 19th centuries maybe and it seems they have very legit reasons to retain these islands based on the old eroded paperwork, but you don't see any democratic nations like spain for example attempt to reclaim their old territories like mexico, the western US and the whole south america excluding brazil.
