If I read the military site correctly, a serviceman can even get one of these awards for thwarting cyber attacks directed towards the DoD

Sadly, there's no way that will ever get to an actual cyber operator that's probably inputting the commands. If anything, it will go to that squadron's commander.

The idea of giving any awards for killing people is sick, tbh. Regardless of whether those medals are given to direct combatants or indirect combatants like drone pilots. I guess the military needs that though to convince some people they should strive to kill as many people as possible and continue to sustain recruitment levels with the promise of this petty reward.

That's not really the point... but armies throughout history have given medals for valor, bravery, etc etc. It's just something that goes along with the military. *shrug* There might be some armies out there that don't have awards for that stuff, but I'd be surprised.
