lol What a sick and disgusting political move to condition the masses to accept drones during controversy.
"Outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced this week a new medal for desk-bound warriors who control killer robots responsible for the deaths of thousands in South Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.
The Distinguished Warfare Medal will recognize drone pilots for their "extraordinary achievements that directly impact on combat operations, but do not involve acts of valor or physical risks that combat entails."*
Remote pilots of unmanned drones are going to receive medals, specifically Distinguished Warfare Medals. What's more, they will outrank the Purple Heart- a medal for soldiers shot or wounded on the battlefield. Is this really deserved? Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

We were talking about this at work... I have no clue how this got approved at that level. Usually we understand officers writing awards for themselves, but this is a bit egregious.

We used to just carpet bomb the out of countries. I think targeted drone strikes are far more humane -- but that's just me.
Killing humane? Signature strikes aren't exactly targeted. They just kill innocents.
Btw, A new finding just came out that only 2% of targeted drone strikes were high level terrorists.
"Michael Isikoff's Feb. 4 report on the "white paper" -- a 16-page memo that laid out, in part, the legal underpinnings that guide the Obama administration's policy of carrying out what they call "targeted killings" with drones -- ushered the use of drones back into the public consciousness."*
What do the American people really think about Obama's drone program? Do they approve of killing suspected terrorists? What if innocent people could be killed (as numbers show, the majority of drone strike casualties are)? How many people meet the definition of a "high level terrorist?" In the main, Americans are largely supportive of using drone strikes to kill "high-level terrorists." From there, however, they get wobbly:
According to the new Huffpost/YouGov poll, 56 percent of Americans say that the drone program should be used to target and kill high-level terrorists, while only 13 percent say that anyone suspected of being associated with a terrorist group should be targeted. Another 13 percent said that nobody should be killed using the drone program. A majority of Americans across most demographic and partisan groups agreed that the program should be used for high-level targets.Naturally, there's little support for using drones to just kill any old terrorist functionary -- we're told we have a huge deficit problem, after all! And the media tends to overstate the extent to which "high-level targets" are being exclusively targeted at a high level. According to a study conducted by the New America Foundation, "only 2 percent of those killed met that definition."
It's inhumane, we are mass murdering civilians, they are war crimes, this real issue should be front and center over most of other fake news.

The idea of giving any awards for killing people is sick, tbh. Regardless of whether those medals are given to direct combatants or indirect combatants like drone pilots. I guess the military needs that though to convince some people they should strive to kill as many people as possible and continue to sustain recruitment levels with the promise of this petty reward.
If I read the military site correctly, a serviceman can even get one of these awards for thwarting cyber attacks directed towards the DoD

You are equating killing to murder. Maybe you should google which medal exactly you get for killing people. I would love to see that. Then while you're at it, you might see that the military isn't really recruiting anymore. Fact is, with the low numbers, the people come to them.
