Right now, the Spurs are paying 4 bigs more than the min: TD, Rasho, Nazr, and Horry. If Scola comes, that will be 5. I do not think Oberto comes for the min, and I do not think the Spurs will pay 6 bigs more than min money.

    Many wants him.

The most important Spanish clubs and one of the most predominant from Italy are targeting and “fighting” to land Fabricio Oberto, whose main priority is making the NBA while he calmly waits.
Three of the four best teams in Spain (Champs Real Madrid, Barcelona and Unicaja Malaga) and which be participating in the Euroleague next season, have the “cordobes” (Oberto) as “the star” to hire. Meanwhile Italian Benetton Treviso, which is also playing the Euroleague, is one of the most interested on Oberto.
“Oberto is the most wanted” was the headline of Marca newspaper, last Saturday. Presidents Florentino Perez (Madrid) and Joan Laporta (Barcelona) agreed and provided the euros required to sign him. The same sports newspaper added “The Argentinean forward is atop of Barza and Madrid’s agenda as well as Unicaja and Benetton’s. However Oberto is fully intended to try the NBA and is waiting a convincing offer from San Antonio Spurs”.
Unicaja’s HC Sergio Scariolo demanded Oberto staying before his re-signing and that was promised by the club managers. Otherwise Scariolo might leave the club, according to “Malaga Hoy” (newspaper).
When Oberto left Pamesa Valencia, said his priority was the NBA, but staying in Europe is a possibility on teams taking part in the Euroleague. He is waiting for the NBA.
Oberto hopes for a formal proposal. Last week RC Buford, Spurs GM, said that he was interested on him and Luis Scola. NBA teams are just starting their off season moves by signing the best free agents and then they’ll go after new players.

I always had the impression that Oberto was better than Scola. I believe he is much older though. Maybe he'll take less realizing this is his last chance to play in the NBA, especially to play with Manu.

Oberto is only 2 years older than Manu. Scola is 3 years younger.

i thought teams could have 14 on the active roster this year? wasn't that in the collective bargaining agreement?

    i found it:
    All Sports

"We were not looking to develop this complete minor league system a la baseball, where you have the right to keep someone down for three times or long durations," Stern said. "It was about true development for us."

A player sent to the NBDL will count against the team's NBA roster, which will remain at 15 players. But rosters are guaranteed to be at a minimum of 14 players - 12 active - and there will no need to "stash" players on an injured list.

hey! i like this player-he's a good scorer. Enjoyed his moves while watching the World, Olympic Qualifying and Olympic games with Manu.

why can't we just sign Oberto, then retain Rasho? I think it'll take him more than a few months to get into the Spurs system.

    Sign Scola or Oberto.
i don't think signing both Scola & Oberto at the same time is the right move. We'll have two players new to the team, there's too much to learn for them to get adjusted...remember what Horry said, the Spurs have about 1,000 setplays in the playbook...

From what I've seen of Oberto is that he's a hard nosed player. Physical and doesn't back down as Rasho does.

If the Spurs can find a team that's ready to take Rasho and send a quality player back or picks, then do it. Oberto IS NOT WORSE then Rasho, that's for sure. So if Oberto doesn't play up to standard or has a hard time adjusting the NBA game, then it's better to have a strugling backup center that makes $2 million then $7 million.

I'm sorry as much as I want to sign players from Olympic Champs Argentina, I still want The Spurs to retain Rasho right now.

Maybe next yr. if we can see how these new recruits fit in the Spurs system.

If they want Oberto, it's to replace Rasho in all likelihood. Which means they think he can check Shaq in spot minutes (and/or they can outscore/take care of Miami in other ways).

There's absolutely no reason to think interest in Oberto means Scola is out. In fact, it suggests otherwise.

I disagree with those above thinking Oberto will be the better player in the NBA. I feel that will be Scola.

I truly hope we bring both over. They rock the flowing-scraggly locks of hair school of basketball even better than Nash.

Note: Is there a chance this is simply an Argentine homer site not really considering Oberto could go elsewhere other than the new-favorite San Antonio Spurs?

if Manu could influence Rasho in signing with the Spurs(Rasho called him before he agreed to sign with the team), there's a big chance the Argentineans sign with this team, esp Scola who is his best friend.

If you need to fill the Massenberg/Marks role, might is well be with somebody that understands motion offenses well. Smart passing big men aren't easy to find for the LLE.

Well you'd have to get rid of Nazr or Rasho, if Oberto and Scola come over. I wonder if Spurs equipment general to manager RC, is going to get both of them. That would be one of a Spurs equipment.
If Spurs have to trade anyone of Nazr or Rasho, Sorry Rasho ... but I see more future in Nazr.

Athenea many thanks for the translation. well done.

IF we could dump Rasho for anything and have Scola and Oberto this would be tremendous. Would there be a team with better passing than: Duncan, Scola, Oberto, Manu, Barry.... all those guys are sweet

    GO RC!!!

We should just get it over with and sign the Argentinian National Team, the whole team, add Tony, Bowen, and Duncan to it, bring in Magnano to run the offense, and let the good times commence

    Hey guys

Do you know how Scola or Oberto are playing?

Scola and Oberto together beat not one time, twice the Dream Team as the Big guys, that´s is both beat, Ben Wallace, Tim Duncan, Jermaine, Amare and Odom

    Is that enough?

Can Rasho beat them, or Nazr?

He does not have to convince Scola, the spurs own his rights so they either trade them, sign him, or not use them.

Oberto I am not sure about.
