You're kidding right? Even Pop couldn't manage to win 3 straight with David and Tim...give credit where credit is due. It's very hard to win a championship year after year, much less 9 with 2 different teams. MJ and Pippen didn't win until PJ came along. Shaq and Kobe didn't win until PJ came along.

How can anyone say a coach who has won 6 rings be over-rated? Year in Year out, whatever team he has coached has been in contention.
David was not in his prime and was injury prone when the spurs won their first. Don't forget Elliott's health and all the other old farts, ellie, kersey etc..

LA had two superstars, maybe top 10 players off all-time on one team plus Big shot Rob. Chicago had MJ the best of all-time, Pippen in his prime, Rodman and more.

Freakin Barry Switzer could have coached those teams.

Now spurs have Parker, Manu, and Tim in their Primes better than they have ever had it before. If the spurs can't repeat with this team, they probably never will.

    I'm not worried....
The are building a very long and athletic team, obviously there are a few more deals to be worked out...but I like it. This line up could cause miss matches everywhere.

    PG: Daniels? 6'4
    SG: Kobe 6'7
    SF: Odom 6'10
    PF: Brown 7'0
    C: Mihm 7'0

Very athletic indeed, but they need to pick up Daniels or maybe Earl Watson. They have Sasha a 6'7 PG who's showing potential and with a few more pieces they can contend in the playoffs.

I am quite curious to watch what unfolds with the Lakers in the coming years. It will go a long way to cementing the legacy that Phil Jackson has in MY mind. Like many others I have not been impressed with his prowess of inheriting teams that have an MVP in his prime with another complementary all star and turning them into championship teams.

I acknowledge that a coach is a vital piece of the championship puzzle and I don’t think that the Bulls or the Lakers would have been as successful with some scrub coach simply because Phil’s greatest strength is his ability to keep a room full of over inflated egos from causing a team to implode. Of course, nothing makes for a happier clubhouse than one that is winning and I think PJ started to lose control when the Lakers fortunes went sour.

I would have been more impressed had he taken a job with a team without any upper echelon stars and started the rebuilding process. Lakers don’t qualify because they still have Kobe Bryant. I would have loved to have seen him take over in New York.

I just have an *asterisk* in my mind with Phil because I cant help but feel he is very careful with his legacy by making sure he went into good situations. While his return to LA is all about the Benjamin’s, it is a bit of a dicey scenario and he has his work cut out for him.

I am concerned that Kobe will turn into Jordan and Odom Pippen. How can anyone worry about this team with no center or point guard. Those are the most important positions and I predict LAL won't make the playoffs again.

I'm actually surpised that he's not getting better run in the MSM. The accepted school of thought seems to be that he back for The Benjamins, and that he'll never see the Lakers in contention in his 3 years.

I'm not worried. Kid Kobe got his comeuppance this year. He's not God. He's not MJ. That'll make a world of difference, even not taking into account the Lack of Shaq. Kwame Brown is a talent, but a big baby, quitting on his team when he wasn't getting burn. Boo Hoo. That kind of player will melt in the crucible of the deep playoffs, assuming they make it that far.

Phil is NOT the best coach for this team. Buss is just desperate to not lose his base while rebuilding.

I'd actually be more worried about the Cavs, had he taken that job, than I am with the Lakers now that he is with them.

so then what are you worried about now?????
I'm sure PJ will take the Lakers team to the Playoffs again. However, they still haven't made "THE TRADE" that would be them in contention again.
READ: I never said PJ could take them to the championship with a 1man show in Kobe.

I don't get how people always say that PJ won all those rings BECAUSE he had such great talent, etc. etc.

There are so many great NBA players and even teams who have not won any championship rings because they don't have a great coach.

As good as Nellie was, with Dirk, Nash and Co. that team could easily have made it to the Finals at least.
Pacers--with Reggie Miller during his prime and the rest of the team---never could get over the edge
Jazz--with Malone and Stockton--could never get over the edge
Spurs 2003--You can't really blame that whole series on .4. Fact of the matter is, PJ somehow motivated and adjusted that team of prima dona drama queens into believing that they could get it done and went on to sweep a very, very, very good Spurs team in 4 straight games!

Winning championships isn't easy, let alone getting 9. Sure MJ, Pippen, Shaq, and Kobe were the talent on the court, but if they didn't have the great coaching in PJ and his smartness, who knows how many rings they would have won. Spurs fans don't just credit Tim Duncan and Manu and Robinson solely for their 3 championships...

Nellie <<<<<<< PJ, Pop, LB ... He was a great gimmick coach, but in a seven game series it was way too easy for gifted coaches to figure out counters for his gimmicks. And once that was done, Nellie's teams were screwed.

We will see just how good a coach Phil is now. Don't forget that his '03-'04 team got rolled like a cheap rug once they got to the Finals, two superstars and all.

Yea, but they were without Malone, and I think the drama between Kobe and Shaq and Payton and his offensive triangle finally caught up with them. They did not play like a team at all........

Worried? No. Here's the ultimate problem facing Phil and the Lakers: Winning can hide a lot of ego problems, but they aren't in a position to start winning. Kobe and Kwame are proven locker room problems and now they'll be together. For as good as Kobe can be he's starting to get more and more injury prone and they don't have a good point guard. The Lakers might make the playoffs, but it won't be anything higher than the seven seed.

I am not worried about L.A. at all until Kobe learns to play team ball. Five against one are great odds- even if that one is an all star.

We will see how well he does when he really has to
coach and put together a team that is not already
    championship caliber.

Phil Jackson didn't coach the last year he was at LA, he just sat on the bench and watched and looked disgusted, with that "Geez, PLEEEEEZE get me out of here!" look that told me he'd rather be just about anywhere else. Kobe and Shaq were playing out their drama and Philly just watched. He didn't even try.

I'll get worried when I see him trade Kobe and put a real team together.
