Yes. we hold the FT advantage and the 50/50 calls have been surprisingly even.
Okay, I know you just want to , but I'll give you a serious basketball answer anyway.
First - For years, the Spurs played at or near the slowest pace in the league. Since a large portion of fouls happen as shots are taking place, fewer possessions = fewer fouls overall.
Second - If you took a moment to look at the whole picture, you would have seen that even though the Spurs tend to be near the bottom for number of fouls committed... so do their opponents. Yes, that's also because of the pace of the games.
Now - when you were doing all your research, did you happen to notice which was the least penalized team in the league LAST season? The Lakers.
And the year before that? The Lakers were tied as the least penalized team in the league.
And the year before that? The Lakers were tied as the third least penalized, just a smidgen out of first.
The year before that, the Spurs were tied as the least penalized team in the league. But guess what? They actually got called for more fouls than their opponents did. That's right... the REAL least penalized team in the league that year was whoever the Spurs were playing.
You see, what really matters is the difference between how many fouls get called against your team vs. how many get called against their opponents. So even in 07-08, when the Spurs were tied as the least penalized team in the league, and the Lakers were right in the middle, it was the Lakers who enjoyed a larger foul differential. Laker opponents got called for 2.0 more fouls per game, while the Spurs opponents only drew 1.2 more fouls per game. In fact, you have to go back to the 2006-2007 season to reach a year where the Spurs foul differential was better than the Lakers. But don't go back to 05-06, because once again that season, the Spurs were whistled for more fouls than their opponents.
THAT is the reason I said you keep your head up your ass. Because it's true.
