Yeah, it broke out several times - I think it started in the section right behind the Spurs bench![]()
I found way more Ewing fans than Robinson fans when I went there years ago. Everyone was butthurt about the Knicks losing with Ewing in street clothes.
If you'd like to change that, then buy court-side tickets. If I'm going to go to a game straight from the office, and sit court-side, I think it's alright for me to wear my work attire. I still cheer loud as F.
Agree. I'm back in SA now, but I lived there for 15 years and yes it's a very transient area (DC Metro), with lots of people trying to connect with their home state or home city. What better way to do that than to see your HOME team! Too bad the Wiz weren't/aren't in the West, I'm sure I would have been at all the games.
I have been to DC for a spurs game when I lived in new york. I don't remember it like this. Yeah I get it that there are very few wizards fans at every game, but the spurs fans that were there last night were extra vocal. I think they liked that we were down a few guys and it was actually compe ive. I mean I looked up and saw all their starters in overtime and our bench was giving them all they could handle! Fun stuff.
I echo all the sentiments already said especially the density of Spurs fans behind the bench. It was the first thing i noticed watching the highlights.
I'm hoping it's also a symptom of the enduring success this team has had for a generation. They've missed the playoffs once since 1989. It'll be 24 out of 25 seasons making the postseason!
Props to all who came out last night. Let's see how much silver and black comes out in Brooklyn today.
I was there last night, section 120 to the right of the spurs bench closer to the basket. I've gone to almost all the Spurs games in DC since we got Duncan and Ive never seen anything like it. There are always a ton of Spurs fans at Wizards games but I've never seen us take over complete sections like we did. The entire area from behind the spurs bench to the visiting teams tunnel were at least 90% SA fans and we were loud. I'm not at all surprised that 'Go Spurs Go' could be heard on tv, there were so many enthusiastic fans! Every time Wiz fans started chanting 'defense' we started up and were definitely annoying a lot of people there. The 2nd overtime we were the only 2 sections standing the whole time. A bunch of the players waved and clapped at us on their way to the locker room after the game.
This was the first game that Ive sat so close to the tunnel and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how many of our players stopped to take pictures/sign autographs, easily more then half the team. Overall they were very gracious with us, almost everyone acknowledged us at some point during the evening.
The year before the Spurs came down from Dallas (1971?), the Houston Rockets would play 2 or 3 games here (at the old Arena). One game against the Lakers found more cheers for the Lakers than for the Rockets and I remember reading in the paper that the Rockets owners said hey were not coming back. It was okay. The Dallas Chaparrals folded that same year and the Spurs were born. San Antonio went wild, and have, since.
The sections behind the Spurs bench are always dominated by S&B at the Verizon (I sat there the last two years). I was in the lower level 4th row in the corner opposite the Spurs bench last night, and yes we were breaking into GSG chants because even in our section it was probably 60/40 Spurs to Wizards fans. Looking around the arena there was definitely more silver and black than red. As others have said, this isn't new, DC is transient, etc etc but it is still fun to be a part of it once a year. Last night I thought since the Wiz don't completely and totally suck this year it might be different, but it was the same as in the past.
The funniest moment was coming back from taking a piss in the 3rd and hearing a big roar from inside. I thought the Wiz had done something big, but no it was Green knocking down a 3![]()
I remember last year when the Spurs traveled to DC that Spurs fans even outnumbered the Wizards fans. But at the time I thought it was just because the Wizards were having a nightmare season and they had designated the game 'French Night' (Diaw, De Colo, Parker, Seraphin all played).
But really I think it's because these east coast teams have such BIG problems selling out games--and local Spurs fans see a golden opportunity to go see the Spurs up close and be loud. Honestly, you can pay 50 bucks and sit in the lower level in most east coast cities they're so desperate to sell tickets.
A video of the "Go Spurs Go" chant that night!
I was behind the Spurs bench. The whole section was Spurs fans. I used to live in Portland and went to Spurs-Blazers games whenever San Antonio visited. What a completely different experience. I kind of feel bad for the Wizards players.
