Its one of the Worlds great cities. I love seeing Pakistanis sleeping on the Tube. I have been to the sunny beaches of Brighton, the vacation spot. Now this is overrated. If ya like old stuff, England is great. I love that country. I love me some real football. Upton Park and the mighty Hammers. Too bad they are switching stadiums. That is a great place to watch soccer. And the blowing bubbles song, I loved it.

These days you can find pretty damn good food in any decent sized city if you know where to look. Especially someplace like London

Well yeah, but my point is none of those are English dishes. They have no history of cuisine and the local food is turrible. I spent like 8 weeks working in Middlesbrough and could barely keep myself nourished. I couldn't even eat the hotel breakfast buffet other than cheese and bread because they cook all their in oil or just somehow ruin the taste. I mean how bad do you have to suck to up bacon? How many "English" restaurants are in your city? None, there's "pubs" where they serve bar food. EDIT: I understand what you are saying though, especially if you were stuck there for work and your options can be somewhat limited.
