Today my son told me that only 4 kids in his class even stand up when the pledge of allegiance is recited in the morning. There is no "under God" said over the intercom although the 4 kids who stand say, "under God." In this class, only 2 kids (my son and one other) are American born - the rest were born in other countries, but raised here. I posted a video of the girl leading a movement for free public college, cancellation of all student debt and $15 minimum wage for campus jobs, and I wonder what is becoming of our kids.

Is it that they feel so en led to free breakfast, free lunch, - that now they want free tuition, no student debt? And not standing for the pledge of allegiance - is there no patriotism, no respect for the flag, no appreciation for those who have fought for the freedom that we enjoy? I'm just shaking my head at what is to become of the next generation.

One thing I am glad of is that the NBA always gives due respect to the flag, our national anthem and the military.
First of all, the original pledge of allegiance had no "under God" in it.

    The rest....

    Blame the pansy liberals.

It's not creepy. It instills at a minimum, questions as to how we became the nation we are today. Going away from such memory aides could be telling of how ur society is decaying.

It starts at home. If you instill a sense of pride, patriotism, and value "liberty and justice for all" at home, your kids will grow up with those values. If you don't, a mindless recital of those values at school isn't going to change it.

    Maybe the problem is parents.

I don't think the "liberty and justice for all" bull applied to minorities back then and still doesn't

This school is in Hialeah (Miami), FL - mostly low-income, Hispanics (not Cuban). Most of the kids are atheists - I was surprised thinking that they would be Catholics (since they are from South America).
Well then it's confusing why you are asking "what's becoming of our kids"

If they come from different countries and cultures, do you want public school to force the kids to adapt and conform to your idea of what a good, patriotic kid should be?

OP is spouting too much stupidity to respond to, but the outright lying needs to be called out:

    Religion

While Roman Catholicism is overwhelmingly the majority religion of city residents, Hialeah also contains the largest Santero Community outside of Cuba.[17]

The parents are Catholics. The kids don't believe in God. Guess (like the schools) - that passing of custom/religion isn't happening.

So the kids are not city residents subject to the census? How do you know they don't believe in God, did you interview each one?

And nice lie about how they are not Cubans but your city has the largest Santero Community in the world outside of Cuba.

How do you know they don't believe in God? Was there a poll?

Maybe, after being with them through 2 1/2 years of classes/lunch etc., my son can take a pretty good guess as to who believes and who doesn't (among the gifted kids he mostly has (academic) classes with - I don't mean PE or Keyboard). The ideology (and whether they believe in God) of some teachers/students come out in discussion. My son thinks it's funny how his AP Chemistry (not Biology) teacher injects her climate change stuff in through eg. giving extra credit for paper on climate change.

Not really the kind of discussions I had in classes back in the day.

    That isn't a religion though.

I dunno know. Maybe I think that for generations we've passed on our customs, beliefs, language, traditions, etc. to our children. But now, somehow, we should just let them float around, leave them to their own devices and let them do whatever they want to do?

you are everything that is wrong with America, just unbelievable ignorance on display with every post.

Climate change should not be taught in science class... Being religious and believing in climate change are incompatible... We're the greatest country in the history of the universe with the most freedom and liberty ...

Let me guess, you don't even have a passport.

I would think that climate change definitely belongs in an Earth/Space Science class and a Biology class (ecology), but handing out extra credit for a research paper on climate change in AP Chemistry? I don't think so, but maybe someone would kindly explain.

I don't understand - what does my having a passport or not have to do with this?

    seriously?

Maybe you should write the American Chemical Society and tell them to stop research on climate change and remove their recommendations from their website: http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/po...atechange.html

How un-American of the leading society of American chemists. Traitors!

Should they teach about gasses in chemistry? Carbon? Maybe they should stick to real science like debunking evolution, teaching about Jesus and creationism, etc.

Carbon is an element. Oxygen is an element. These elements can combine to form Carbon Dioxide, which is a heat trapping gas. Carbon Dioxide emissions are often sited as contributing to global warming or climate change.
