well now that we are onto "Ask Dr. Jim".. i have a few questions myself....
how common is it for older fillings to fall out?
My husband as 3 fillings that are about 15 yrs old (cheapy metal ones). One is loose but hasn't fallen out. Also 1 of the teeth is discolored around the filling.. like the filling is leaking it;s color into the tooth or something. How bad is that? Is it a sign that the tooth is dying?
2nd question: 3 yrs ago husabnd also had the full mouth x-rays done and they said his wisdom teeth were impacted far up into his jaw and he needed "immediate" surgery.
So we scheduale the surgery for 4 weeks later and in the meantime he losses the dental coverage so we don;t go thru with it.
Meanwhile 3 years later he still has never felt any pain from this.
was that dentist full o' crap? Or is it possible not to feel somethign like that?
ok. i'm done . thanks![]()

Obviously S y's husband is the best around, but since you want more names... I have been to a Dr. Roger Beal over off of I-10/Wurzbach area. He was very good. You will have to look up his number.
Fillings usually do not fall out without either recurrent decay or a fracture in the tooth. Silver fillings can last a long time(up to 35 yrs) Tooth colored filling last about 5 yrs before they start to wear down.
If your husband's fillings are falling out, he needs to get them checked because if they have decay, they need to be cleaned out before a rootcanal is needed.
Wisdom teeth can hurt off and on because the bacteria can cause an on again, off again infection around the gums called pericornitis. Sometimes, antibiotics can take away pain around 3rd molars and the pain can disappear for months and years. If he has impacted 3rds and they are close to the 2nd molars, they can damage the good 2nd molars, thus causing the need to extract them aso. He needs to have them evaluated so they can see if any damage is being done to the 2nd molars.
If the 3rd molars are errupted and not giving any problems, then he can just keep the 3rd molars, and forego the surgery.
I need to start my own advice column, I think.

BTW, if you go to S y's husband, please call S y when her husband is finished with you and is getting ready to drive home.
*winking at S y*

Damn right he is
But as of right now he's unable to take afternoon appointments and since you are in school during the day, you'd probably want an appointment after school or closer to your house or whatever. My husband works downtown.
Sort of a "heads up" , so to speak .![]()
Thanks Jim!!
I knew he had to get that looked at! Now I've got ammo.
