I still think that Disturbed cover of "Sounds of Silence" is absolute garbage but apparently I'm in the minority.

I'm not a Disturbed fan at all, but....do like their cover. There is an earlier version of Sound of Silence pre the one we all l know.

    In a word...wow!

This was a hillbilly stealing a tune off a race record by Luke Jordan.

Blind Willie Reynolds (Joe?) was a Louisiana bluesman from way back when. He recorded a few records, this his masterpiece from 1930.

Keb Mo covering the very first song the great Robert Johnson recorded.

If I told you I was mixing that in with some John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson just last night ya wouldn't believe me.

In 1941 Alan Lomax who worked for The Library of Congress was in Mississippi looking for Robert Johnson. He didn't know Robert had been dead since 1937. Checking around he found that out and was also told about a guy who played liKe Robert who lived over on The Stovall Plantation, yep....Mackinley "Muddy Waters" Morganfield. After convincing Muddy he wasn't the law (illegal moonshine) he recorded Waters right there on his front porch. A must have recording.

Some pretty neat info there, I bet a lot of these old pre-war songs have some great stories to them

    While not a cover.....

Some guy calling himself Freezone recorded one song. yep, just one song and nobody knows who he was or how this recording ever happened. A blues mystery.

You ever wonder what kind of music was around at the time people didn't record? In the backwoods areas without much electricity let alone recording devices. There is probably plenty of talent that never got to be heard outside of a small town.

Here's got to be one of the most famous blues covers

Elmore James was Brian Jones big influense, he idolized James. The Stones wanted to play them blues but to make $$$$$$$$$$....

Charley Patton was known as "The King of the Delta Blues", but....the guy who was his mentor was the unrecorded Henry Sloan.

There are so many blues cats who only recorded one record.

    Rude Lacy
    Henry Spaulding
    Mattie Delaney
    Bobby Grant
    Bo Jones
    Lane Hardin
    Jim Thompkins.....one song
    John D.Fox
    Elvie Thomas

    There are others.

All of them just as gifted as those who had enought material for a CD.

The real deal with them old blues is when these people sing about hard times, it was hard times. A line like....don't let the sun go down on me.....that was a real fear.

The oldest "recorded"*** blues was Mamie Smiths "Crazy Blues" from 1920, but this is jazzy with a band. The first country blues was Papa Charley Jackson in 1924, a lone singer with a banjo. Sylvester Weaver from Kentucky recorded a guitar solo in 1923.

There is no doubt history missed out on a ton of talent simply because they were never recorded.

    *** can be debated.

Here is Texan Bo Jones who only recorded one record. Of all the blues I own it gets no more raw, way back in the alley, bottom of the barrell than this.

Ya picture an old black guy hunched over a beat up acoustic, a jug of whiskey on a table, his old bulldog at his feet, moanin' his blues somewhere in west Texas.

Ya know, the true masters of the art of the cover song haven’t even been mentioned in this thread, sheesh~~~~~~~

Nothing excites me more than preteens in chorus.

The gals here display a raw sexuality that gets me rock hard for the music, it’s crazy I tell ya!~~~~

Taking the music of the blacks and putting it back in the hands of sexy white kids, just the way I like it! sheesh~
