Steals mean jack with regards to team defense. If I am looking at Spur defensive stats to be worried about, I'd go with their blocked shots rank (11th). The Spurs have routinely been the best shotblocking team in the NBA for many years, even after DRob's retirement. Last season they were 2nd and the season prior, tied for 3rd. Since the Spurs' basic defensive strategy is to force opponents to the baseline and into a shotblocker would seem to indicate a slight weakening in the Spurs' interior D. Though, of course, it could mean the Spurs' perimeter defenders are doing a better job of not getting beat by their man.
Still, the Spurs' D is not built upon making steals. For teams that relying on steals as a staple of their defense, for every steal made there are probably two easy scores for an opponent due to attempted steals that took a defender out of position.
Frankly, I'm a bit shocked that a Spurs fan would complain about their steals ranking.

Spurs Miss Manu's Steals
And Manu Is The Best At Steals On This Team
I would grade the Spurs at A- so far. 34-10 is not too shabby. Only the Pistons are playing better. Only two other teams, Mavs and Suns, are over .500 for away games.
We all know the Spurs need to play better to repeat, but it's not the apocalypse.
just wondering, who's 1st in all these stats?

Steve Kerr said it best awhile back: "The Spurs are just not as creative offensively without Manu." His injuries have hurt the Spurs offensively. But they've got to be cautious and protect him so he's 100% come playoff time. He's the key.
If I'm not mistaken, San Antonio was 34-10 at this point last year.
