Come on, mikey. Everyone knows that David Robinson's back was perfectly sound every year of his career after 1996-97 and that he never missed any games because of floating particles in his back that affected his balance, strength, or flexibility. And that broken foot -- a joke! I suspect Pop and Dave still sit around and have a good chuckle over how creative they were to dream that up.

Sean Elliott's injuries that year were a complete ruse, too. In fact, Popovich and the Spurs were so committed to that ruse, that in order to keep everyone off the scent, Pop decided in 1997-98 to play Elliott (arguably one of the top 10 players in franchise history) in only 36 games and to keep him off the playoff roster.
As usual, you are spot on my friend!

At that, Pop tanked that season the RIGHT way. I don't see how anyone can really dispute that any more. I mean, it's way too obvious of a tank job if you lose enough games to ensure that you have the most ping-pong balls in the lottery hopper. It's far more effective to make sure that you're only slightly better than the worst team (particularly when that team has it's own chances plus those of another horrendous team in the lottery mix).

Why guarantee you'll have the best chance at the gem of the draft when you can pretty severely diminish your chances and lend a shadow of doubt to your plan? Give yourself, say, the 3rd best chance (substantially behind the team with the best chance, just for good measure) in a 1-player draft and your tanking strategy is absolutely brilliant. It will give your fans plenty of opportunity to defend the season as a non-tank and it will take fans of other teams years to figure out the subtle brilliance of your plan.

That Pop is so CIA. Truly.
    Exactly!

It's the perfect alibi... I mean who would tank for a position that would likely land them Ron Mercer or worse?

Only someone as clever-like-a-fox as Pop.

Good luck in the spring, because you will need it. The road is not as easy as it was for you last year, oh and the NBA can't help you with seeding this time.
Talk about easy road last season....don't make SPURS fans laugh...you know Phx had an easier road to the WCF than the Spurs who had to duke it out with the hottest team at the end of the regular season which was the Nuggets.. then had to slug it out with the bullying Sonics that kept pounding parker and ginobili...

Now lets see who the suns drew in the 1st round? oh yeah, the struggling grizzlies then it was on to the defense soft Mavs.....now who has the last laugh.........Too bad the Spurs beat the suns at their own game....that was boring at all.....

I love how Sean Elliott was so committed to continuing the ruse that he faked the bad kidney and even had the fake transplant operation.

Also, even five years later, David Robinson continued to pretend he had chronic back pain.

Really, the Spurs should get some credit for their commitment to the con.

Man, that post was right in the forum's sweet spot.

Hey Sun fan, at least we don't have to cheer for a team that has yet to win a championship and is partially owned by a who wears chicken suits to make fun of injured players.
