I'd give my vote to Bruce Bowen if I had a vote. But, I wouldn't at all be surprised if Ben Wallace won it again.

It's been said many times, but the thing that makes it hard for Bruce to win is the fact that nothing that he does exceptionally on defense really shows up on the stats sheet. It's unfortunate that there is no stat on "denials" or "forced turnovers" (maybe there is) or "contested shtos." The value of Bruce Bowen is sometimes lost in statistical numbers. That's probably the biggest knock against him winning the DPOY.

I saw a Sports llustrated poll while browsing in the airport the other day and according to that poll, Duncan was chosen the DPOY. They pointed out that though Duncan's numbers are down, they're still quite decent, and his defense been strong even when he's struggled offensively.

Still, I hope Bowen gets it. I think he will. The people who vote know they've robbed him of it before.

Who complained about him this year except for Ray Allen?

I think Kobe saying Bowen is the best defender in the game outweighs Ray Allen's complaining.

It will still be a tight vote between Bowen and BWallace though.
not that i'd give much credence to his opinion, but Ron Artest has very recently and very publically been trashing bowen.

I picture Kobe in his free time sitting around playing NBA 2K6 and taking 150 shots a game with himself.

ONe thing that I never understood is that they always downplay Bowen's defense because he has Duncan behind him. If you ask me thats a load of cause you still have to defend the man in front of you.

when I was at U of M, Tai Streets lived down the hall from me in the dorms, and actually did spend the majority of his time blaring hip hop and playing NCAA football, repeatedly throwing to himself.

Bowen Top Choice For Defensive Player Of The Year

Playoff fever is looming in the air in Texas and the San Antonio Spurs are vaulting for a hard earned, hard knock home court position. With the regular season coming to and end, many S.A. fans will be turning their attention to the NBA post season awards.

Of course our first stop on the awards ballot is MVP, the golden accolade that can only be adorned upon the loftiest of shoulders. With Former MVP Tim Duncan suffering from multiple ailments through out the year, many loyal spurs fans would expect banner years from Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. Though both Manu and Parker had some very good games, neither could be considered worthy of the prize Most Valuable Player in the NBA. I’d look to Dirk Nowitzki, or Steve Nash to take the leagues top award this year.

With MVP dreams doused for the Spurs, we all know that there is one award that will always be at least a consideration among Spurs Players, Defensive Player of the Year.

And no player is hated, feared and respected more through out the league for his defense as Bruce Bowen. As the season trudged on in 06 it became apparent that a good defense was more important than a good offence in San Antonio. Having been plagued with injuries and sickness through-out the regular season, the Spurs haven’t had a lot of high scoring games. With that said we look to Bruce Bowen as defensive specialist that can on occasion be a threat from the outside.

Bowen has guarded them all this year, and despite an occasional slip in consistency he’s held his own against the best point guards, small guards, small and power forwards all season. Not to mention consistently receiving the best compliment a defender can get from his opposition; their uncensored slander.

Now that we’re only weeks away from the post-season, and San Antonio’s players are starting to look healthier I’d look for Coach Popovich to start taking Bowen to the outside more as a shooting guard. Bowen earned a reputation last post-season as an outside shooting threat after ringing up 29 post season 3-pointers in 2005 with a .433 outside shooting percentage.

We can count on San Antonio to go deep into one of the best matched post seasons on recent record. Boasting one of the deepest benches in the league it’s hard to imagine Duncan not leading his team to at least the third round of this year’s play-offs. And with a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year like Bowen things can only be looking brighter.

In a close second place for Defensive Player I’d pick Ben Wallace, then Gerald Wallace finishing third in the race.

While I agree Ben Wallace is a hard worker, NO ONE deserves the DPoY more then Bruce... The guy is what?..... going on 36 in june? Regularly shuts down players like Gay "take it up the ass" allen, Kobe "mutual respect" bryant, Dirk "I like complaining" Nowiztki?

Night in and Night out this OLD mofo is shutting down punks half his age!!

It's going to be amazing that SA will have its best-ever regular season record and not win any individual awards. I fully expect Big Ben to get the DPoY, and prolly Flip to get the CoY (not saying I agree with both but that's how I see it).

Yes, like most teams, the Spurs players will say they would rather win it all than win regular season awards and then go fishing. I guess "Team of the Year" would trump all - but, dang it, there's that Detroit team standing in the way, an improved Mavs team, etc.

Hey, Kori, how about a DPoY vbookie to go along with the MVP vbookie?

Ben Wallace is a jerk. His refusing to go back into the game just showed more of what I already knew about him.

    him.

Also, the Spurs are a better defensive team anyway. Bruce should win it. The Spurs allowed less points/game and they play in the West where scoring is more plentiful too.

2 of top 3 are in the West.

What is your point. Scoring is higher in the West overall.

    ESPN Analysts choices
Choose DPOY from the drop down list.

I had little doubt that Bowen would win DPOY, and I know this is far from scientific, but now I am not so sure. Detroit having the best record, and not the MVP on its roster will probably end with the consolation prize of them getting coach of the year or most likely DPOY.
