Well, the brief version pretty much contains all major plot developments. In the longer version though, it starts out with the beginning of the disease, whatever it is, and he thinks back about how meaningless is life is while he is in agony (very Camus-like, though had it been Camus he probably would have killed someone else and not felt remorse somewhere in the story) ... then he begs for death for about eighty pages, and then he finally dies. At the end he has been embalmed I believe, and I remember him describing the odd smell in the room - it was at his house at the viewing and his wife is all broken up. That's pretty much it.
