The Spurs looked headed back to the SBC Center for a seventh game when Dallas jumped out to a 15-point lead midway through the third quarter. Said Speedy Claxton: "I was like, 'Damn, we messed up again.'"
By then, Popovich had already benched Parker, sitting him for good less than two minutes into the second half. With less than four minutes left in the third quarter, Popovich called on Kerr.
"The Coach of the Year," Nick Van Exel said, "made a great subs ution. He brought in the Zone Buster."
Kerr quickly hit his first 3-pointer, but the Spurs were still down 12 with 10:40 left. Manu Ginobili then made a 3-pointer from the left wing. Jackson followed with another. After Ginobili stripped Finley, Jackson pulled up on the break to swish one more 3-pointer.
The Spurs leaped off the bench, the crowd went quiet, and Mavericks coach Don Nelson signaled for a timeout.
The Spurs weren't done. Kerr tied the game with another 3-pointer. When his defender again left him, he swished another. Duncan followed with a hook. Van Exel left Kerr, who thanked him by drilling one more three, stretching the Spurs' lead to 79-71 with 5:13 left and forcing the Mavericks to call another timeout and abandon their zone.
"I didn't say anything," Kerr said. "I was too shocked I got in the game."
Kerr did more than help the Spurs with his shooting. He tapped out two rebounds and played solid defense.
"A lot of people don't know I was the Masterlock Defender of the Year in the sixth grade," Kerr said. "Apparently the Mavericks weren't aware of that. They were going at me."
