Um, yeah. Whatever you say, chief.
Maybe you assumed we think he wasn't a big part of the finals.
Seeing as the convo is about whether his jersey should be retired or not, and not about if his contribution was significant.![]()
Um, yeah. Whatever you say, chief.
This statement just ended this argument. Jaren Jackson was the man during that run.
to the clowns who is tryin to credit his shot in the 99 finals, even if we lost that game we wouldve still been 3-2 up, dude is ridin duncans back, doesnt deserve to have his jersey retired.
I agree with this part of your statement.
Avery was just the guy bringing the ball up court who hit a few mid-range jumpers and floaters in the lane.Isn't that what he was? He was a great vocal too, but he wasn't first. second. third, or fourth option.Um, yeah. Whatever you say, chief.
The "game winning" shot he hit was with lik 1 minute and 30 seconds to go.
It wasn't a clutch pressure shot with 3 seconds left on the clock.
Not to mention his jumper was worse than Parkers.
The shot he hit was good but lets be honest it wasn't that pressure packed as compared to say a robert Horry "if you don't make this, than this series is probably going to be over" type shot. It was a wide open jumper.
He's proving to be more Cuban than Pop in his post-playing career, so his cred has taken a hit.
We'll still retire his jersey though. It's just the way we are.
Some of you guys need to go back and watch the '99 Finals. AJ did more than just hit a jumper. He also hit the rim from 30 feet away with one second on the shot clock which kept the Knicks from having time to make a play to win the game. If Sprewell had gotten any time to do anything, he would have surely scored on Sean, who was the one who passed up two open threes in the last minute of the game.
Still shouldn't retire his jersey. Any urge out of a sense of loyalty should have gone away after the bear hug game.
Give it up dude, the only reason you have an argument is becuase the Spurs would retire a ham sandwich.
A ham sandwich has more meat than the argument that AJ wasn't a big part of the '99 championship. I have an argument because it's ing valid.
Avery is the enemy. I don't need to say the enemy's jerseys in our house. AJ is the devil. AJ is the mother ing antichrist. AJ.
One ing game dude is all you got to hang your tiara on. Where are the rings pre-Timmy, how brilliant was AJ then?
I was never a huge Avery fan but I always thought they should retire his jersey because he is very loved around the city and especially within the organization. He is very appreciated within the Spurs for what he did while he was here, even if Spurs fans now don't realize it all. (Maybe y'all didn't watch Spurs basketball before 99)
That being said, one thing that I really dislike about Avery now is that he took on a lot of Cuban's personality in Dallas. Avery isn't a whiny by nature, but for the last 8 weeks he's been acting like one. He complains about the refs, he discredits opponents, and overall acts like an ass.
He needs to remember that it was Pop that he looked up to for such a long time and his behavior in the last 2 months has been about as unPoplike as he could be.
I think this loss will humble him a bit and hopefully he and the Mavs will come back strong next year.
Um, no. You mentioned the last two minutes of one game, which I proceeded to correct. I suspect that you are just as ignorant of the rest of the '99 season. If Pre-Duncan championships are your barometer then you need to pull down all the ones that are currently there. This is kind of a stupid argument, since I already agreed with you that they shouldn't retire AJ's jersey.
So why defend him, maybe this is the real AJ. Do you turn into a horrible whinny just becuase your boss is a horrible whinny , ok maybe you do.
I'm not sure he's as loved as you say he is. No doubt people loved AJ when he was here but i'm don't think they like the new and not so improved Avery Johnson.
Good i'm glad we agree, AJ.
I used to love AJ man. I respected his journey through the NBA. I respected his relationship with Jesus. I used to love to hear him say after every Spurs playoff victory "Yes sir Spurs"! And the way he would refer to David as "5-0" in that destinctive twang he has.
But the AJ I saw being interviewed after every game was a totally different AJ. It seemed like he forgot everything that he learned during his time with the Spurs. I always say that it starts at the top. And for some reason AJ felt it was ok to act like Cuban. And Terry and Stackhouse. Never in a million would I have guessed that AJ would someday coach an immature team like the mavs. By this point in the season I would have expected AJ to challenge his team to behave with dignity and class. Something he was surrounded by with the Spurs. But I guess when you have an owner like Cuban there is only so much you can do. You can't keep the owner away from the team.
The bottom line is that AJ will always be associated with the Spurs. No matter what he does in Dallas. It will take some time to forget how he acted when he coached against the Spurs. But when all is said and done he will always the Little General. And he will always have a place in the hearts of the true Spurs fans.
I'm not defending his behavior, just his contribution to one season's championship run. I didn't defend Jack after the Brawl, but I wouldn't say that he somehow didn't help the team just because he started punching fans.
Speaking of the not-so-improved AJ, my wife asked me tonight if I ever thought I'd be rooting against Avery Johnson so vehemently. I have to say that I never did.

Man, I missed arguing with Spurs fans. That's what it's all about.
Well said Kori,
I too, always liked and admired AJ for his drive and determination and for being the tenacious "heart and soul" behind that '99 Championship team.
I've also grown to dislke him for his Cuban-like behavior during the Spurs series and his " -type" dealings with the local Dallas media. He has really come off like an asshole the past several weeks.
That said, I still believe his jersey should go into the rafters at the SBC. I've got the perfect scenario in mind too. The Spurs can retire his jersey during halftime of the 2007-2008 regular-season opener versus the Mavs. Shortly after they receive their rings for winning the 2007 NBA championship.

AJ is dead to me. Had he been classy during this playoff run I wouldnt have such a big problem with him. But no, he chose to be a just like the rest of that ass organization. Why should we be classy to him when he showed no class towards our team in his post game rants about bear hugs and . him. I´d rather see a David Wood jersey up there than AJ´s.
Oddly enough, AJ was never known for being a quick defender or anything...he was more of a physical body up type, who would play chest to chest and...one might even say, "bear hug" you.
In fact, didn't him and Steve Nash get into it over something like back when Nash was a rookie with the Suns?
I seem to remember a buzz cut Nash getting pissed off against us that year, but dont remember any particulars.
