I don't see him as a Spur anymore. Therefore, there's no reason to retire his Jersey.

even before he was the coach of the Mavs i didn't and still don't think we should: 1) he hasn't been a Spurs his whole career and I think that's some qualification reqired and 2) it wasn't like he was this huge impact, yeah yeah he made that 3 pointer to win a game in the Finals (we probly would have one the next game anyways) but so did Robert Horry and Steve Kerr

    so case and point NO!

He was a fan favorite for a long time.

He hit a big shot to win the finals.

He is the all-time team leader in assists.

Still, you do it more as a tribute to what he gave the city as a person, and not a player.

    So yeah, he deserves it.

    I don't get this argument.

Why in the would his jersey be retired on this team?

    + He wasn't that good.
+ His stats weren't that good.
+ He was a vocal leader, so ing what? So were a lot of other people whose jerseys have never and will never be retired.
+ He is now officially the Little Midget. outta' here, stay in Dallas you .

AJ isn't even man enough to apologize to the media guy he berated and embarassed just for asking a question. Keep in mind that this is a media guy who liked AJ enough not to lob him a softball question in the first place and not get angry at him even after he started in.

Not to be picky, but he didn't hit a 3 and if I'm not mistaken only DRob has been a Spurs his entire career and been retired. I have to double check on Moore and Silas. He still is the Spurs all-time assists leader (which I think Tony will eventually usurp by a lot... ... Timmy might pass him) and was the co spiritual leader of the team. With that said, I don't think we should retire his number... I felt the exact opposite last year, but his at ude has soured me on it.

I think that when Popovich steps down as the Spurs' coach, Avery will come to replace him.

    I think, that's not accurate.

He's not welcome here anymore, and he's pretty set in Dallas for many years to come.

If the Spurs didn't have sorry ass standards for retiring Jerseys this wouldn't be a question.

He was a role player all his time here in San Antonio. There's no reason to retire a role player IMO. You don't retire a player's jersey just because he's a fan favorite.

I would retire Antonio Daniels jersey before I would retire AJ's jersey. And that's cause AD was worthless.

I've heard the argument that he was the 5th best starter on that team.

I'm not sure I disagree. Elie was good, Sean was good, Tim/David were both very good...Avery was just the guy bringing the ball up court who hit a few mid-range jumpers and floaters in the lane.

I wouldn't retire his jersey in my bathroom.

Whatever you guys may say, AJ was a ing man in the '99 Finals. Don't even pretend he wasn't. The midrange jumper and floater to which you refer happened in the last two minutes of the clinching NBA Finals game in Madison Square Garden. That's ing big. You need to acknowledge that or change the team in your profile to Dallas Mavericks.

    Ignorance.

There's no doubt AJ isn't a hall of famer, but to say he wasn't a big part of the '99 championship just because he's turned out to be such a classless little is stupid.

If a few big shots is your requirement, retire Jaren Jacksons jersey while you're at it.

I didn't say anything about retiring his jersey. It's stupid to retire a guy's jersey just because the team's never had a decent point guard for any length of time in their entire history. That would be like putting Danny White in the ring of honor. I'm just saying that some of you numbskulls sound stupid acting like AJ wasn't big in the '99 Finals. I wouldn't say Jaren Jackson wasn't big in '99 either.
