Okay SPARKY...where is this 'high academic standard' of aTm if it DID in fact exist, which it does not, but how would that prevent you from having a winning football team ?
When players that score 300 on the SAT don't qualify to go to school A then school B has a recruiting advantage. The only trouble is A&M has the same admissions policy for student athletes as UT IINM, which kind of kills that argument. There's a reason A&M is getting their asses kicked in recruiting, and it has nothing to do with their high standards. They'd recruit in Huntsville if it would help them win the conference.

aTm is still the Northwestern of the Big XII though.
Just like Fran is the Bill Self/Larry Brown of college football - go to a place with lots in place, farm it, get yours out of it, leave before the decline. Unfortunately Fran hasn't left before the decline.

I'm assuming he will now leave soon, either by being forced out or because of NCAA investigations about his recruiting Goodsen.

    blah blah blah
I thought we were talking about football, and the ability to recruit. The point is, A&M doens't have higher standards for athletes than UT does, so the argument is lame. Nobody outside of the mouth breathing UT fans is saying A&M is a bad university.

you are using a Brit list? Geez, some of you guys would use a Sesame Street list if you thought it made your school look better.

...that list is lame. first off, USC annihilates t.u. in every reputable ranking system in the USA. check out the princeton review or college news....for starters.

According to U.S. News and World Report:

    USC #30
    Texas #52
    Texas A&M #60

Aggie is closer to Horn than Horn is to Trojan in diploma value.

yeah, thats closer to what it usually is. even if you average my two schools...thats 45 and still better than t.u., ha ha.

...but i think the princeton review has USC in the 20s maybe even the teens....i can't remember.

Texas actually moved down from 15th in 2004. The rankings are explained:

" The rankings are based on the amount of cited research produced by faculty members, the ratio of faculty to student numbers, a university’s success in attracting foreign students and in attracting internationally renowned academics.

An additional factor in the rankings is the findings from a previous Times Higher Education Supplement survey in which 1,300 academics in 88 countries were asked to name the best ins utions in the fields they felt knowledgeable about.

The five factors were weighted and transformed against a scale that gave the top university 1,000 points and ranked everyone else as a proportion of that score.

“Leading universities increasingly define themselves in terms of international compe ion,” said John O'Leary, editor of the supplement. “By taking account of the views of academics from across five continents and using the most up-to-date statistics, our ranking gives an INFORMED picture of the world’s top universities.”

Key word, informed. Not 'aggie's opinion, or broken hearted trojan fans opinion.

1300 top academics in 88 countires were asked THEIR opinion.

Not what a bunch of goofs at a half assed has been US news rag think.

Here's another one that has Texas at 36th, if it makes you feel better, USC at 50, aTm at 89, which is respectable, world wide.

    http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005_Top100.htm

The crux of it all, is that aTm is not a better university than UT, never has been, probably never will be. UT has too damn much money for conducting research.

    US news....good grief.

...A&M has never been ranked above t.u. in these college type rankings, however this is the first ever rankings i have seen t.u. over USC....meaning its hogwash.

you cannot even compare the schools, USC dominates in every aspect. i'll choose to look at every other ranking, except this one, if you don't mind.
